Episode 6: Dates and Releasing Pigeons

Chinese Version English Version (with commentary) Japanese Version
Shinkai: 什麼?"(What?) So?
(Say something)
“What???” she demands.
Shinkai: 說什麼? (Say what?)
“What what?” he counters foolishly.
(Say anything) “Say something.” she tells him, irritably.
(All right, we could go and eat ..... or not....)

He looks a bit nonplussed but then says. “Okay…… If you’d like ….”

He pauses. “ …we could go out to eat?” he suggests hopefully. She doesn't immediately reply.

“Or not,” he says abruptly, walking away with his banana in hand, clearly not wanting to be rejected by her yet again.

Ogawa: 又來了 (Again?) “Again?” she asks him unexpectedly.
Shinkai: Huh?
“What?” he asks, turning around and staring at her quizzically.
Ogawa: 我們不是常一起吃飯嗎?(Don’t we often go out to eat together?) “We always go out to eat.” she points out.
(Not sure about this) “Yeah but …” He wasn’t quite sure of her point.
(If we want to somewhere different, that would be all right) She looks down at the ground and then up at him again. “If it was somewhere different – it would be okay…” she tells him a little hesitantly, a little shyly.
(Somewhere different?)
“Somewhere new?” he asks her, very encouraged. He starts walking towards her again. She continues to look at him..
(What I mean is - not okonomiyaki or sushi ....) “Not okonomiyaki or sushi. More …..”
(Oh I know, a place where you can drink tea and chat.) “Oh I know” He says enthusiastically, suddenly realising her meaning. “A more trendy place?” Oh a place with a trendy mood.
(Well it doesn't definitely have to be that kind of place)
“Not really.....” she says with a laugh.
(Basically a place where you can go for a date, right?) “Basically a date spot … for a date – right?” He suggests.
(Up till now we've never gone a date, right?)
“We’ve never gone on a date, right?”
(I too have seldom gone to this kind of place. What time today is good for you?)
“And we should.” he says emphatically. “What time today is good?” he asks her. Because I want to go there.
(Not possible today)
“I can’t today.” she tells him, taking a step away from him.
Shinkai: Huh? (Huh - are you playing with me?)
“What????” he demands in disbelief, taking a step towards her. “Playing hard to get?” he asks her, walking towards her step for step as she continues to walk backwards away from him, hands shoved in her pockets like a little child.
(No. I'm working the late shift today). “No – I’m working nights today and tomorrow.”
(If that's the case, you should have said so from the start!)
“You should have said so from the beginning then!” he says, looking annoyed and disappointed.
(I said I wanted to go - I didn't say go today).

She looks defensive. “I was going to but you were complaining about …”

(So you're saying I misunderstood. Tomorrow I'm going to Beijing).

“I was not!!” he interrupts her, glaring at her.

Both stop where they are and Ogawa moves awkwardly on the spot from one foot to another, peeping up at him hopefully through her hair.

“I’m going to Beijing tomorrow.” he tells her.

Ogawa: 然後呢? (And after that?) “So?” she asks him. And what?
(I'm returning on Sunday - is Sunday night all right?)

“I’m coming back Sunday …. How’s Sunday night?” He asks her hopefully.

(Should be possible) “Sounds okay.” she says cautiously.
(Well I'll first book a place... a place with a date like atmopshere)
“Right I’ll book somewhere .. fancy.” he suggests eagerly.
Ogawa: 真下流 (Filthy / disgusting!)
“Sounds like you’re up to something.” She says suspiciously.
Shinkai: 妳說什麼?(What did you say?)
“Why?” he demands, looking offended.
(The way you said it was very filthy / disgusting - suggestive perhaps?)

“The way you said it.” she tells him irritably and quickly walks away.

I'm talking to you! Are you listening?)

“Hey!” She keeps walking.

“Wait!” He calls out to her retreating back.

“Are you listening?” he demands in irritation.

(I'll wait for you. Sunday night).

She stops and turns. “I’ll see you Sunday night.” there is a hint of a smile on her pale face. “I’ll be waiting for you.”

(Don't release my pigeons - ie don't stand me up!) He smiles slightly but then shouts. “Don’t forget! Don't dissemble / pretend not to remember your promise.
