Movies with Cat, Frog & Koala
with regular guest appearances from P and Zeitgeist (and the occasional guest reviewer)
Here are our pithy thoughts ... Koala still can't decide if she wants to go with the star rating, the A+ rating system or the x out of 10 rating. Margaret and David we're not, but we certainly love our movies .....You won't find plot summaries here - just thoughts which are supposed to be pithy except for Koala who goes verbose sometimes .....

About
a boy
Cat's rating and comment: It’s really nice to see Hugh
Grant playing a bastard again .. even if he manages to redeem himself by the
end of the film. However, it’s absolutely frightening that his theory
about splitting the day into units bears so much relevance to my own life ..
maybe I’ll go get my hair cut today (that’s about four units) …
7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I really liked it - Hugh Grant film,
based on the book by um the guy who wrote Fever Pitch and (ahh Nick Hornby is
his name. I cannot remember the name of the other film) Hugh Grant was good,
Jati found it hard to get into at the beginning but I have read the book and
thought the pace was good and just like reading. 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I normally don't like Hugh Grant
but I really enjoyed this movie. I thought the development of Hugh Grant's character
was very touching and the relationship between Will and Marcus was just gorgeous.
The scene with the bread and the duck was hilarious! My favourite moments were
the two respective Christmases, the montage of Marcus visiting Will's house
and also the "Killing me Softly" scene. "The worst part was
when they started singing with their eyes closed". Hee hee. 8 out
of 10.
P's rating & comment: Huge Grant is kinda different in
this film. I like his character-no need to do anything. The boy looked weird
but lovable. I like Rachel Weisz but she didn't have much use in this movie.
Overall, it's an enjoyable movie 7.5 out of 10.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Loved Hugh's hair and the
eponymous "boy" was quite natural. None of that awful, too-large-eyed, cutesy
US style kid in this film. Problem is, even the terrifically tonsured Hugh is
still more of the same. Substitute "clueless about love till it smacks him in
the face" (Four Weddings... Notting Hill et al) with "clueless about empathy
for the others until it smacks him in the face" and you have this film. But
I like a bewildered Hugh Grant, so 7 out of 10. Babe factor 7 out of 10 (for
the hair). Did I mention Hugh's great hair?
A
beautiful mind
Cat's
rating and comment: I’d been avoiding seeing this because mental
illness is never a pleasant subject matter bit I’m glad I got around to
it. Excellent performances from the entire cast. Nice to see Paul Bettany pop
up (last seen by me doing a Chaucer impersonation in Knight’s Tale), and
Josh Lucas in the background as well. I guess true mathematics doesn’t
make interesting films and they had to glam it up a bit so I’m sure this
was inaccurate. The effects used to show reality and Nash’s reality were
excellent. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: to come?
Koala's rating and comment: probably won't see it ...
P's rating and comment: When watching these true story movies,
you have to accept the fact that they would glorify that person. If you can
get around that, then you can enjoy the movie much more. Russell Crowe is great.
The direction is good. I like movies happening in schools and universities.

Almost
Famous
Cat's rating and comment:Loved the music. The characters were
interesting but a little self-indulgent. The narrator was lovely and I quite
liked Penny Lane but they all seemed to be a little lost. Maybe that was the
point. 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very fun, very silly, very enjoyable.
So long since I watched it but it was interesting. I loved the mother "Don't
do drugs" letting her children have that freedom but still being embarrassing
to them. Aren't all mothers like that! 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: We saw this movie because the
movie we wanted to see was sold out. I wasn't looking forward to it, but I ended
up quite liking it. Favourite moments were Penny Lane demanding piteously: "Why
doesn't he love me, why doesn't he love me?" (haven't we all been
there?) and of course the beautiful bus scene when they sing Tiny Dancer.
Make sure you check out the hilarious Dave Grohl version too. 6 out
of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Saw this movie because it was
well received by critics and i always like films with lots of character development.
This one however I thought wanted to be a lot deeper than it really was. Didn't
find any of the characters particularly likable and I found it all dragged on
and the audience was supposed to be moved but.. nyer. 5 out of 10.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: I loved this film, even if
it was a bit over-long. Kate Hudson is a luminous beauty and Billy Cruddup has
enough "woohoo" sex appeal to make him watchable. Our hero/narrator was also
good and Frances McDormand is, as always, excellent. Many great scenes: Billy
at the suburban kids' party... gay confessions on the crashing plane... But
the best scene (and one of my favourites in all film actually) is the tour bus
scene where they all sing "Tiny Dancer". Lyrical and emotional. A fantastically
simple but effective way to emphasise the power of music to move us. Elton never
did it so good. Score 8 out of 10. Babe factor 6 out of 10 (I don't go for the
long-haired rock star look).
Amelie
Cat's rating and comment: Jean-Pierre Jeunet has such a lovely
sense of humour and his films all have
a sense of wonder and the ridiculous. This film brought a smile to my face.
9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Finally saw this on video.. very
weird and strange and interesting and intriguing. Loved the gnome bit. Very
enjoyable, and lovely to watch someone try and change the world. 7 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: I shouldn't rate so many films
so highly this early in the year but there have been some fantastic ones. Audrey
Tatou is absolutely adorable as the wide-eyed Amelie who discovers a toy box
hidden in her bathroom and decides to do good deeds and change the world. The
movie has some hysterical comments / jokes, beautiful images, a wonderful soundtrack
and an overwhelming optimism that makes you totally believe in soulmates all
over again. I found this movie incredibly delightful. 9.5 / 10 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I did actually enjoy this; a
bit of a film about nothing but still very well done and rather humorous all
round. Characters all were quite likable and it also did have a very strong
French feel to it (other than the language) the general shots were very well
done. 8.5/10
P's rating and comment: The main plot is not special at all.
But all the bits and pieces are very good. I particularly like the guy who takes
instant photo everywhere. The twist is surprising and you would smile when you
think back.9 out of 10.
America's
Sweethearts
Cat's rating and comment: Disappointing. I like the actors
and the set-up was kinda fun … I guess I was just expecting more. It wasn't
terrible. 6 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I was looking forward to seeing
this film and I was sorely disappointed. A great cast which just did not deliver.
The jokes were forced and overdone and there was just no chemistry between any
of the characters and I usually love John Cusack films. 3 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Catherine Zeta Jones is getting
really good at playing a bitch. This movie was cute but not as good as it should
have been considering how great John Cusack can be. 6 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Haven't seen it.
Anger
Management
Cat's rating and comment: Big belly laughs. I guess I’ve
seen way too many movies in my life because I always find myself saying ‘I
knew where this was going’. But I guess that’s part of the charm
of it … to know where it’s going but still enjoy the getting there.
Adam Sandler plays the drippy, sweet character he plays so well. Jack Nicholson
plays the maniac HE plays so well. It’s a nice combination. Some cringey
moments but lots of laughs. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Haven't seen it.
Koala's rating & comment: Haven't seen it.
Antwone
Fisher
Cat's
rating and comment: This is a nice gentle film about a Navy Seaman
who is sent to a psychiatrist (Denzel Washington) after he attacks a NCO on
board ship. At first he refuses to speak but gradually he reveals his story
and starts coming to terms with it. The film starts with a dream and ends with
the dream becoming reality. Fantastic performances from Derek Luke & Denzel
Washington. Derek Luke’s first film role. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Loved this film, so sweet so lovely
and except for the horrible old north shore stuck up (*& it would have been
great. The movie reminded me of a book I had been reading recently about a child
being abused. So sad that this goes on in the world, all hidden away. A beautiful
film about redemption and finding yourself. Made me think about my mum too.
Denzel almost gorgeous as always - I don't like him in moustaches but such a
lovely actor and a great directorial debut! 8.5 out of 10
Koala's rating and comment: haven't seen it.
Bad
Boys 2
Cat's rating and comment: More mindless thuggery & semi-automatic
weapons fire!! All done in a highly entertaining way of course. I love Will
Smith & Martin Lawrence in these roles. And the raid in Cuba and the escape
to Guantanamo Bay were ridiculously over the top. Good, rollicking, stupid fun.
8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment:to come.
Koala's rating & comment: Haven't seen it
Bandits
Cat's rating and comment: Liked the look of it. Liked the story.
Liked the conclusion. Had some great elements. There's something about it that
didn't quite hold together though .. can't put my finger on it. Enjoyed it.
6.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: A quite amusing film, with many
bits that have you laughing and other bits you stare at the screen with disbelief
and in other bits you remember you are watching a film. I was not totally engrossed
in this film as I did remember it was always a film and the characters did not
totally grab me. Defiantly a funny film and a good film to watch but.... there
was something lacking. 6 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Haven't seen it
Behind
enemy lines
Cat's rating and comment: If it's a comedy I give it 9 out
of 10. If it's an action film I give it 2 out of 10. Bloody hysterical .. watch
out for the evil tracksuit, it's giving the tracker all his strength and genius.
And why did the cute guy have to get shot so early on?
Frog's rating and comment: To come
Koala's rating & comment: My goodness - this movie was
so hilariously bad. Keep an eye out for the Track Suit of Evil. Over the top
acting, American propaganda and melodrama. Very enjoyable though. =) 6 out of

Bend it
like Beckham
Cat's rating and comment: I really enjoyed this film but I’m
not sure what to say about it. Just proves that you should write your reviews
regularly so you don’t forget your initial reactions. Laughed a lot through
this film. Loved the cultural clash, the costuming, the relationships and the
soccer. Definitely a feel-good film. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: About an Indian girl in England
wanting to play soccer and having to deal with her families prejudices and societies
pressures and assumptions about girls who play sport. It also looks at her friend
and the pressure she copes with in her family. Very funny! Everyone I know who
has seen it has enjoyed it and laughed all the way through it. Don't leave until
the credits have finished! Second film I have enjoyed by this director and here's
to many more to make me laugh and even enjoy watching soccer (now that's a feat!)
9 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Loved it - it was hilarious.
I saw it in a theatre in HK full of Chinese who couldn't stop laughing. I loved
all the characters, the parents were hilarious and the coach had the most heavenly
eyes .... :) Looking at Pocket's review, I feel like repeating that I really
loved it. :) I also found the relationship between the father and daughter really
touching - and got all choked up and teary-eyed! 9 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I thought this was a nice movie,
it was cute, the characters were likable but on the whole... I found it a bit
overrated. Why was this such a hit? What made everyone thing this movie was
so great? I mean it's true it addressed certain issues in a comical way... and
I did smile abit...Probably the victim of overhype again for me. It was a good
flick and ok I am always a sucker for girls in knee pads with abs... not enough
for me to NOT bring the overall average down with a 6.5 out of 10.
10/5/03 - I watched this again and found it actually more entertaining
the second time round- not really sure what made it different but i'm going
to be a little more generous and amend my rating to 7.5/10
Big Wednesday
Cat's rating and comment: haven't seen it yet.
Frog's rating and comment: haven't seen it yet.
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it yet.
Ripple's rating and comment: This was one of the first surf
culture films and others like the Keanu/Patrick Swayze vehicle Point Break owe
a lot to it (especially as Gary Busey was in both). Also starred Billy Katt
- later of Greatest American Hero fame and Jan-Michael Vincent (prolific B-grade
actor). Follows the lives of 3 close friends from the early 60's into the 70's
as we slowly watch their lives change and they drift apart - reunited for what
is probably the last time they'll all be together - to surf the biggest waves
seen on their break in 100 years (hence the title - it was Wednesday and the
waves were really... big ;). My only criticism is that the film spends a little
too long establishing the friend's teenage relationships when a little more
depth at the other end of the film would have rounded things off. The surfing
cameo by Gerry Lopez, and surfing footage generally, was awesome. 7 out of 10.
Birthday
Girl
Cat's rating and comment: This was kind of bizarre and unusual.
Nicole Kidman is really choosing some interesting roles at the moment. Ben Chaplin
was lovely. 8.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Nicole Kidman, Ben Chaplin, interesting,
gripping, weird, definitely interesting and intriguing. I can only use adjectives
to describe this film because well if I said too much I would give away too
much but let me just say that for half the film Nicole either does not speak
or speaks in Russian. She is very good in doing both and getting the point across.
um 7 and a half out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Haven't seen it - but own the

Black Hawk
Down
Cat's rating and comment: If you can ignore the reality of
the situation this is a well put together war film. Good performances, lots
of gritty reality, and confusing camera shots that make you feel that you know
what war is all about (even if you've never seen an actual gun in your entire
life). It's up there with Full Metal Jacket & Platoon. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very moving, just the sheer numbers
of people against one or two men. Of course these one or two men were in the
wrong place at the wrong time but as Koala says, ignore the propaganda and just
enjoy it for what it is - a war film. I found it was interesting that even though
the characters were not highly developed, you still cared for them. 8 out of
10
Koala's rating & comment: Gritty, intense and very compelling.
The soundtrack to this film is amazingly evocative and all of the acting is
wonderful. I have problems taking Eric Bana seriously but all of the actors
do a great job in this movie. Put aside the American propaganda and take in
a very well made war movie. 8.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: No plot really to this movie
but just tried to tell it as it was. I liked this movie, good performances all
round, cinematography was great and soundreack was also well done. Agreed Eric
Bana will always be one of the inferior 'Fast Forward' actors or the
kickboxing nut in 'The Castle'. Nice how it didn't really give any crap "America
the land of the free" and basically showed the film's content matter as
"one big #$%up". Liked it. 8.5 out of 10
P's rating and comment: This movie has no plot and message.
Just keep on shooting. I think this is a good example of anything that has shooting
and is about war sells. The slow motion way of filming has been used in Gladiator
and Hannibal already, can Ridley Scott think of something new? 5 out of 10.
Blade 2
Frog's
comment: Wow Pocket did a long review on Blade
2
Koala's comment: He certainly
did. I won't be seeing it though - Pocket's already vetted it for me and it
failed the Koala Gore / Impaling Horror Test.
Pocket's rating and comment: X-Men was considered Marvel Comic's film
saviour, but it is interesting to note the character of Blade was based around
a 1973 comic book character from the popular comic book house. And now there's
a sequel. I actually had read a spoiler to this movie and really was not expecting
it to be very good at all. The plot sounded rather laughable and everything
sounded all a bit gratuitous. Watching it, my opinion was justified- the plot
was ridiculous and the acting was even worse. However I don't think anyone really
goes to see these kind of films for good plot and acting, and thus what the
movie lacks in storytelling it does make up in very very sweet looking costume
and props design and some very fast paced action sequences that do leave your
neck muscles tense at the end of each scene. Click here
to read the rest of Pocket's review. 7/10
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Look, you either like these
sorts of films or you don't. I confess at the outset that I dig action films
and vampire films, so action/vampire films go straight to my hind brain. Having
said that it is gross and really violent, and suffers from logic (yes, yes not
counting the vampires) and continuity issues. 6 out of 10. Babe factor 5 out
of 10 (I don't dig Wesley and it was missing the pouty Stephen Dorff and the
great Udo Kier).
Blue
Crush
Cat's rating and comment: Again I have to say there was too
much story before we got to the surfing. Standard storyline .. girl suffers
set-back while following her dream of becoming a pro-surfer and has to overcome
her fears while falling in love and fighting with all her friends. Hang on ..
this sounds like and HSC English story .. anyway, it looked good, I liked the
actors and the ending was realistic. 6.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: To come.
Koala's rating & comment: I had fairly low (ie extremely
low!) expectations of this movie and was pleasantly surprised. A "triumph
of the human spirit" surfing movie with girls, it has the advantage of
having good music (notwithstanding the appallingly mysogonistic remix of Bananarama's
"Cruel Summer"), great scenery and beautiful looking people. Kate
Bosworth plays a wholesomely beautiful surfer chick competing in the Pipe Masters.
Surfing footage was absorbing, support performances from her friends were believable
although the younger sister was a very bad actress. Matthew Davis whom I loved
in "Tigerland" and loathed in "Legally Blonde" puts in an
attractive performance as a visiting quarterback with a huge wallet, questionable
motives and a rather gorgeous smile. Drawbacks for me were the fact that Anne
Marie is never really convincing as a female athlete who is committed to her
sport and what could have been a rather sweet romance between the leads is tainted
by (possibly intended) shadows of payment for favours. 6 out of 10.
Pocket's rating and comment: I wasn't that impressed with this
movie, and really it's saving grace was Kate Bosworth (Who I think looks like
a girl-next door-hot-chick-in-highschool version of Natalie Portman) who just
looked.. well hot all the time in her bikini. Plot was sort of lame, she really
wasn't very convincing as a surfer dedicated to her sport- Michelle Rodriguez
didn't really fit in this role, she's made a name for herself as a scowling
grrr kinda chick so it's kinda unbelievable they'd be friends. The scary thing
is that other than Kate Bosworth, the only thing I really recall from this movie
is one of the football player's display of his "la de da's" brrr.
disturbing. 6.5/10
Bootmen
Cat's rating and comment: The dancing made up for the terrible
script and clunky acting.Adam Garcia’s hair should have been given a separate
credit.Good rollicking fun. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Sophie Lee sux! She can't act for
toffee but everything else was fun, love the boot stomping, could not stop stomping
when I came out of the film in my
own boots. Makes you want to learn taps. Andy Garcia very cute and very fun
watching the film. 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I found it entertaining. The
acting was a bit hit and miss but the dancing was a lot of fun. 7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I'm a sucker for movies with
high energy dance sequences. forget the laughable acting and plot, and you don't
really relate to any of the characters, but the tap dancing is VERY cool. entertaining
braindead stuff. 7 out of 10.
Bourne
Identity
Cat's
rating and comment: Hee hee hee .. I probably should have written my
review just after I saw this film. From what I understand it's a major departure
from the book and was quite ridiculous in places. Good chewing gum for the mind,
however, with lots of action and cool explosions. 6.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Big perve factor, lots of fast action,
interesting and exciting and
exotic locations.... what more could a girl ask for? Bit silly in parts but
very exciting, hanging edge of your seat stuff and who knew a mini could drive
like that?? 7 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: I've finally seen this movie!
I enjoyed it - I loved the eyecandy factor in terms of the European scenes.
Matt Damon looked more attractive in this movie than he has ever looked and
the fight sequences were great. I could not stand Marie the girl - she was panicky,
pukey and wailey - definitely not Action Chick material. Nonetheless, I thought
it was sufficiently suspenseful and well-acted. 7.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Wasn't sure about this movie,
I think it didn't quite know WHAT it wanted to be. I'd beg to differ
on the "lots of action" bit with Cat. Not enough action really, but
then not enough "oh now i get it" plot thickener to really
be an intellectual thriller either. Matt Damon was good in his role, and the
film was gripping enough to keep you to the end, but there wasn't enough to
really make u feel satisfied. Worth seeing though Just for the few fight sequences
that there were. 7 out of 10.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Bias at the outset: I will
watch anything with Matt Damon in it. (even School Ties, hey I have it on DVD).
He is (along with Ed Norton) the actor of his generation. This was a big change
of pace for him and he handled it very credibly. Tight action sequences (loved
the fight in his Paris flat) solid acting, great multilingual skills from Damon
(hey I look for that stuff!). Could've been called "Drive Lola Drive"... Score:
a solid 7 out of 10. Babe factor 9 out of 10 (go Matt go).
Bridget
Jones's Diary
Cat's rating and comment: Really loved this film. Characters
that were so real it became painful .. but in a good way. First film I think
I have seen where the heroine looks like someone you might know. 9 out of 10
Frog's rating and comment: (wow I am behind in my reviewing)
Hugh Grant a gorgeous bastard
Renee Z good representation of BJ though bit sad how they went on and on in
the media how she had to put on weight for it. Like there is something wrong
with being curveceous Colin Firth- stammering British cannot get to the point
man - gorgeous and fun! Loved it, lots of fun! 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I didn't think I'd like this one but
was pleasantly surprised. I loved it. From her fear of being "destined
to die alone and be[ing] found three weeks later, half-eaten by Alsatians"
to her dislike of "smug married couples" - I thought Bridget was adorably
hilarious. Colin Firth (with or without weird jumpers) was beautiful and the
"It's raining men" sequence is just wonderful. I haven't laughed aloud
in a movie so much in a very long time! I went in expecting to hate it - expecting
a self-conscious, fatuous, Sex in the City wannabe, but discovered a wonderfully
warm movie about a really appealing character who's delightfully honest. Hugh
Grant's 'bastard' Mr Emotional F*ckwit character was so true to life that it
was positively scary!!!! 9 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I really expected to hate this,
it was British and it was I thought going to be about a whining woman. It was
always likened to Sex in the City, which Ithink is a really dumb show, so I
went in with no real expectations. Instead I found it all very entertaining,
it was very funny and you really find the character development and interaction
both belivable and likable. There are no gratuitous Brit comedy screwball parts,
alot of it is very refreshing and you really find yourself liking Bridget and
wanting her to get her happy ending. Her friends are great, and the sequence
where Colin Firth and Hugh Grant confront each other is glorious. 8 out of 10.
Bright
Young Things
Rt. Hon. Darth Gervais Peregrine Simious, 3rd Lord Vader of Deathstar
comment: This movie was wonderful to look at and listen to and faithfully
recreated the Twenties/Thirties It People mileu of Evelyn Waugh's book, but
it had a problem. Everything was just too spiffing and fun, the hoooray Henrys
and Henriettas all had a wonderful series of larks and japes (with cameo after
cameo of Great British Thespisans) and then ... well, then our hero, Adam Syme,
thinks it all perfectly vile having blandly enjoyed it up until then. Up until
that point there is not much to communicate a growing sense of unease with the
artifice and unpleasantness of the bright world of the pre-WWII celebrocracy.
For all Syme's artfully expressed revulsion in the Hon. Agatha Runcible's psychiatric
ward there's not a lot of discomfiture apart from one thing, when Lord Balcairn,
failed aristocrat and gossip columnist, gasses himself in his slummy basement
flat (to no great consequence) for having been disinvited from all of the best
parties. It's a perfectly spiffing film, with a major flaw, just like Adam Syme,
who somnambulantly enjoys the antics of the Bright Young Things for far too
long.

Frog's rating & comment: Steve Martin and Queen Latifah
in a comedy about mistaken identity and two different lifestyles coming together.
Quite amusing, laughed out loud, some stuff weird, but I must say my favourite
bit was at the end when Steve Martin dressed up in some "homies" clothes
and managed to get himself entrance to a very cool black night club and he has
women wanting to dance with him. 7 out of 10

Bring
it on
Cat's rating and comment: I was waiting for Eliza Dushku to
do more tumbles and beat a couple of people up (oh hang on, that’s that
tv show I like to watch).. Fun is quite right, loved the Clover routines and
the school spirit. 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I assumed it was going to be another
stupid teen movie but this was hilarious! Really enjoyed it - lots of fun 7
out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: This movie was a lot of fun.
I expected a lot worse so was pleasantly surprised. Don't forget I detest cheerleaders!
This movie was energetic and sufficiently tongue-in-cheek that it never takes
itself too seriously. Eliza Dushku's character was great. 8 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I actually liked this movie
a whole lot more the second time around - I am a cheerleading fan, I love all
the stunts and the way the Americans can take it so seriously as a real competitive
sport so i did expect alot from this film. However I am not a Kirsten Dunst
Fan - I did find Jesse Bradford's character was a direct ripoff of Xander from
Buffy, and having Eliza Dushku in it made it seem very Buffy-esque for a while,
however there the similarities would end. On the whole I would have liked to
see a lot more routines and dancing, but there are plenty of babes galore and
all and all Igave it an enthusiastic 2 thumbs up;) 8 out of 10.
Bruce Almighty
Cat's
rating and comment: Hee hee hee. I am not a big Jim Carey fan (big
confession time) but this was very amusing. Even now if I think about the dog
being ‘toilet trained’ I start giggling. Rather predictable but
still highly entertaining. 6 out of 10.

Bulletproof
Monk
Cat's
rating and comment: I’m not sure exactly why but this reminded
me a lot of ‘The Golden Child’ (the one with Eddie Murphy having
to rescue the little boy who is part of a Buddhist prophecy). Yun-Fat Chow is
a Tibetan monk who has protected a sacred scroll for 60 years and now it’s
almost time for him to find a successor. And of course because this is 21st
century USA the successor is extraordinarily unlikely (Seann William Scott)
and the interpretation of the prophecy is hysterical. Some lovely fight-scenes
(would have been disappointing without them) and a generally cool-looking production.
7.5 out of 10.

I
capture the castle
Cat's rating and comment: A film with a heartbeat. Lovely eccentric
English family growing up in an old castle. In walk two quite attractive American
boys & turn their odd little existence upside-down. And yes, it IS Riley
Finn (Marc Blucas) as Neil Cotton!! Rose Burns is great as the older, flighty
sister. Tara Fitzgerald is wonderful as the artistic step-mother who dyes all
their clothing green and stands naked in the rain. Just a fabulously warm &
friendly sort of a film. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Quite a sweet film and very faithful
to the book. Very sad and gentle and the clothes very period costuming. Go you
British costume dramas. I enjoyed that but didn't recognise it was Riley from
Buffy til Cat told me at the end. Very sad ending but that is how it is in the
book and glad they didn't change it to a happy ending. Bloody men cannot make
up their minds who they like and expect a girl to let them bounce around and
be waiting for them. 8/10
Koala's rating & comment: Finally saw this! I read the
book ages ago and found it bittersweet then - found it bittersweet this time
too...... Rose Byrne is so lovely but such a brat. I liked Riley, was a bit
disappointed that he would go for the shallow sister, but there you have it.
I can't take the guy who plays Elliot from ET seriously. :) I enjoyed this.
8 out of 10 for me.
Pocket's rating & comment: Haven't seen it.
Catch
me if you can
Cat's rating and comment: What a fascinating
story!! I'll have to read the book now. I liked the period look and the casting.
It didn't take long to get an understanding of how differently banks operated
in the sixties. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I am not a big Leonardo di Caprio
fan but this role perfectly suited him, a youth caught up in things of his own
devising but not sure how to get out of them. He is reliant on the tricks his
father taught him and is obsessed with trying to get his parents back together,
thinking if he gets their money back they can return to the lifestyle they were
accomplished to having then his home life will return to being the happy homelife
it was. Tom Hanks is great as the obsessive FBI agent pursuing him around the
country, trying to arrest Leonardo's character. Based on a true story it is
amazing at his audacity in getting away with being a pilot, doctor & lawyer.
Some was good luck, some was sheer bull shitting and the rest was amusing at
his study procedures. I would have enjoyed this film more except for the people
sitting behind me having a loud discussion which kept distracting me. 8 out
of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I didn't really want to see this
movie but ended up enjoying it. Leonardo di Caprio was surprisingly good and
convincing in the role. I found Tom Hanks kind of annoying but that's because
I don't like Tom Hanks. I thought the movie was a little bit long and slightly
repetitive - in the sense that I found myself going: "Ok, yes I get it,
he's doing another scam etc etc". Was that Jennifer Garner I saw? Anyway,
7 out of 10 for me.
Pocket's rating & comment: I liked this, although I couldn't
help thinking that Leonardo di Caprio went to the "Tom Cruise School of
acting" for this part. His little snickers and head nods and voice projection
were all very Few Good Men-esque - I'm not saying that's a bad thing. The story
was based on a real life thing and it's important to remember it is set in the
60's before you all go off thinking "wow is it that easy? cool!" Tom
Hanks seems to still play himself regardless of whether he's wearing hornrim
glasses or not. Same as Christoper Walken, and it makes you wonder if it's really
that hard to be an actor? ;) 8 out of 10.
Changing
Lanes
Cat's rating and comment: Food for thought.
I found this film a little disturbing. It's not hard to get so caught up in
what you do that you lose sight of common decency so I found it easy to identify
with these characters. The ending was not what I was expecting but still satisfactory.
8.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Probably won't see this.
Koala's rating & comment: Eww, I hated this. It was dark,
depressing, bleak. One of those movies that tries to say - reality and being
realistic means believing the worst about everyone and settling for being rotten
because that's just the way it is. I prefer to stick to the unrealistic world
of Middle Earth where there is always still hope. 5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment:I actually liked this. I had
NO idea what this film was going to be about so I found it compelling
enough to get me in till the end (except that my DVD stuffed up and I had to
watch bits of it to piece it together). I was expecting a much more grimmer
ending - but it turned out ok. I thought Samuel L Jackson's portrayal was great.
It's nice to see his versatility as a black actor - a far cry from 'Shaft'
but then I'd like to see him do a Sidney Poitier for REAL scope;) Ben Affleck
has yet to prove to me he can be anything other than.. the same role he always
plays - likeable at times but otherwise annoying as hell and somewhat whiney
with a goofy side. You'd probably expect Samuel L Jackson's character to do
more to persuade Affleck's character to help him more with his case rather than
just be immature and go "nyer nyer I got something you want". 7 out
of 10.
Charlies
Angels
Cat's rating and comment: Fabulous. Love seeing the girls doing
all the good stunts. And great references to the series. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: So much fun and even better to see
them poking fun at themselves. A bit too much showing off cleavage and naked
bodies for me but still all in all very funny 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I really loved this movie. Found
it entertaining, funny and I'm such a sucker for martial arts. 8.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: When they cast this I thought
it sounded abit iffy, but the movie was great. Very entertaining stuff, had
alot of pace, humour, likable characters, good soundtrack and mad stunts and
wirework. 8.5 out of 10.
Charles'
Angels 2
Cat's rating and comment: Again I was expecting a moderately
weak sequel but was looking forward to some cool fight scenes and costumes.
The beginning looked a lot like the Bananarama video for Venus and the helicopter
thing was (*giggle*) just like a recent Bond. All in all I liked it!! In a lot
of ways it had more substance than the first film (relatively speaking). So
my overall rating is a good fun romp, more of the same girl-power thang, worth
a look. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: to come.
Koala's rating & comment: This was definitely not as fun
as the first one. It took me a couple of goes to finish it. Forced, not so cute
..... 6 out of 10 .... Sorry gals.
Chicago
Cat's rating and comment: Highlights include ‘Cell Block
Tango’, ‘Mr Cellophane’ and ‘When You’re Good
to Mama’. I didn’t realise I knew this much music from Chicago but
I guess that’s what comes from having friends in the amateur musical society
circle. The performances were energetic, the staging was gorgeous, I loved the
costuming. I’m confused by the categories used by the Oscar committee
.. because I would say that Richard Gere is support to the two gals …
8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very enjoyable, I must admit I preferred
it on Broadway where they
just interrupt into song as if it was normal like a typical musical while in
the movie it is more dream sequences that it all takes place the songs and the
dancing. Richard Gere was better than I expected. Very toe tapping and enjoyable
8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I liked "All that jazz",
"Cell Block Tango (he had it comin'!!! ;)" and "Nowadays".
Other than that, I hated all of the characters who were thoroughly
unlovable!!! It looked great though. Pocket fell asleep about 1/4 of the way
through. Very over-rated movie which did not deserve that many Oscars. The Two
Towers was robbed, man. 5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating and comment: I never liked this play, the characters
all are very unlikable and the music I find it to be somewhat..nothing spesh.
And I am one who loves musicals; I couldn't see how the acting was anything
to write home about either and...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz 3 out of 10
Chocolat
Cat's rating and comment:It was beautifully shot and a nice
gentle story. I love the idea of chocolate with chillie and that people's personalities
can be determined by the food they eat. 9.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Oh I was just craving chocolate
throughout this movie, very sweet and lovely about how two people (and lots
of chocolate) can change the people around them. Judi Dench wonderful 8 out
of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I loved Rachel Portman's score
for this movie and it was a beautiful looking film with a great performance
from all of the actors. Even though I'm not a fan of dark chocolate, I was sorely
tempted by the delicious masterpieces on the big screen. 8 out of 10.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Not a big Johnny Depp fan,
he's just too pretty. It gets in the way. But this was a gorgeous movie. Juliette
Binoche had the perfect blend of sass, sincerity and self-doubt. Love the little
bits of mysticism. The French countryside has never looked so good and it also
features one of the greatest actors on the planet: Dame Judi Dench. 7 out of
10. Babe factor 5 out of 10 (sorry Deppsters!).
Confidence
Cat's rating and comment: I love a good triple-twist at the
end of a film. Just when you think you have all the pieces in place they throw
a spanner in the works. Reminiscent of ‘The Sting’ (one of my all
time favourite films and the film that made me realise that Robert Redford is
a spunk) and ‘The Grifters’. Walk into this film remembering you
have to sort through the visual clues. Very likeable cast & a nice slick
look. Dustin Hoffman is extraordinarily unlikeable in this role; slimy, horrible,
irritating with the whole chewing thing. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Andy Garcia was almost unrecognisable.
Twists and turns so you had to keep guess and re-evaluating what you thought
was happening, what was the grift? Who was being conned? Dustin convincingly
repugnant, I had no sympathy for him at all. Glad that he didn't chew gum the
whole way through the film or I would have wanted him killed. Fred Burns very
clever and good acting. 8/10
Koala's rating & comment: Haven't seen it.
Pocket's rating & comment: Haven't seen it.
The
Count of Monte Cristo
Cat's rating and comment: I quite enjoyed it. The costumes
were nice. The sets were nice. There were some excellent sword fights. Guy Pearce
was sufficiently evil. It's a great story. The last couple of minutes were horrid.
7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: This film was pretty bad, not sure
which is worse Josie and The Pussycats or this! Guy Pearce and the guy who played
Villefort (James Frain) ponced around the film, acting more gay (ok that is
sterotypical) than anything. I know Guy was supposed to be a sneering nobleman
and looking down his nose at everyone and everything but he just looked like
everything was a bad smell and terribly campy. The swashing and buckling was
good and Mondego's wife's (Mercédès Iguanada)revenge was pretty
cool but otherwise pretty boring and lacklustre. The best bit excitement I got
was at the Count of Monte Cristo's party, not because he landed in a balloon
but I thought I recognised the palace he was at. 4 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: To be frank, I was disappointed
by The Count. It could have been so much more than it was. I like James Frain
but he was badly used in this, Guy Pearce had some major Nostril Power going
which I found extremely distracting. Furthermore, the sequence with Dumbledore
in the prison was done so much better in Zorro with Anthony Hopkins. Where was
the suspense? I never liked the lead - Jim Cavaziel or however you spell his
name spends his whole time looking like a stunned mullet, staring vaguely into
space and I know I'm being harsh but I was disappointed. Mercedes despite having
the Padme Amidala "Haven't aged a day in a decade" syndrome was all
right and the boy who played the son was cute. 5 out of 10.
Coyote
Ugly
Cat's rating and comment: There was far too much story before
they got to the dancing on the bar bit.Adam Garcia got to act a little and everyone
got to live out their dreams. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: This film was fun and silly, I saw something
the other day that Andy Garcia's character was supposed to be a yankee but they
changed it for him (was it his great dancing skills - which you don't see or
his great acting skills - ditto) No it was fun, pouty lips and all from the
lead character, gratuitous bar top dancing scenes and all in all fun songs to
sing along to 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Not a great movie, terrible storyline
and acting but a guilty pleasure. The bar-top dancing was entertaining and the
soundtrack was fun. Adam Garcia's character was also very lovable. 6.5 out of
10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Gratuitous was the key word
for this movie. Violet annoyed the hell out of me and her head and mouth were
so big they looked like she was going to eat Adam Garcia's head. The bar dancing
sequences made this film and they really just needed more of those. Good soundtrack
though. Bridget Moynihan rocked;)7 out of 10.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Stupid film. Silly premise
and painful acting (though Adam Garcia is cute in a wooden way). But I have
just four words to say: Garcia on the bar, Garcia on the bar, Garcia on the
bar (well, four words said 3 times...) 4 out of 10. Babe factor 9 out of 10.
Crossroads
Cat's rating and comment: It was a public holiday with very
little on at the cinema. My friends refused to see the horror film I had suggested.
So we decided to go have a giggle at Britney. So we snuck in after the lights
went down and … Turned out we needn't have worried. Britney didn't keep
breaking into song, the other characters got their share of the limelight, and
it was generally quite entertaining. 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment:A very sugar sweet teen film with
an incredible hottie male actor (lets just not talk about him being called Anson
Mount) Britneyy Spears was not as bad as I feared it would be, full of gratuitous
singing scenes and Brittany's midriff and what's with those sleeves? Very singable
songs, very sweet film and not as bad as I feared. 6 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Definitely one of those "not
as bad as it could have been" gigs. True, the word "gratuitous"
seems to sum up a lot of the film and you might emerge warbling schmaltzy songs
like - "I'm not a girl - not yet a woman" while flopping around bizarre
floppy sleeves but that's a small price to pay for the entertainment value.
Britney's mid-riff should have received a separate credit in view of the extensive
screen-time it received. Poor Cat had to endure my sarcastic sotto voce comments
throughout the entire movie. I still can't believe that Cat & Frog were
willing to see this but won't see 40 Days and 40 Nights with me. *pout* Hey
Pocket - I bought the DVD :D. 6 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: No, this movie was crap.
Even the 8 under 12 year old girls in the audience thought so. Redeeming points
are seeing Britney dance around in her underwear at the beginning, and maybe
see Britney dance around in.. well her underwear also near the beginning. Even
the gratuitous karaoke bar singing sequence left me cold. Britney herself didn't
do a bad job, just the movie's story was crap and really didn't do a whole lot
for the entertainment side. Could have been a whole lot more fun. 3/10
Crouching
Tiger Hidden Dragon
Cat's rating and comment: Beautiful cinematography. The action
sequences were breath-taking and there was enough ambiguity in the ending for
everyone to keep talking about it for months. Again, the girls got to do lots
of fighting (there seems to be a theme in our films . . ) 9.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Beautiful, exotic, exciting, loved
the mystical fantastical fighting
sequences 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I love martial arts, Michelle
Yeoh, Chow Yun Fat. I found it tragic and compelling and think it's just a sensational
movie. Plus, I've always had a romantic soft spot for Xin Jiang province in
China. Silk Road here I come!! 9.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Love it. Great use of wirework,
cinematography, the acting was superb and chicks who kick butt are awesome;)
The story line was also quite compelling. 9.5 out of 10.
Daredevil
Cat's rating and comment: Yay … more of my childhood on
the big-screen. It’s nice that they’re working through them now
that they have the technology to make them look good. I guess it had that weird
unreal look to some of the leaping around sort of scenes that Spider-Man had
but all in all it looked lush. The sensory deprivation tank was a nice touch.
9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Knew nothing about this comic hero
and did enjoy it (even with annoying giggly talking people - not us!) Sad though
and so open for the sequal, cute sequence during closing credits. Bit silly,
he tells us he is dying at the end and manages to go on and fight two other
people and defeat them and swing around the city, so obviously when he was stabbed
she did not get any vital organs but still he said he was dying so a bit silly.
But I enjoyed it. 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it.
Pocket's rating & comment: Daredevil is a Marvel comic
book character that has a small but loyal following - almost a poor man's Spiderman
really. Hearing of him being translated to the big screen, given the success
of X-Men & Spiderman - I had high expectations and found myself VERY
disapointed. Ben Affleck was fine as a Matt Murdock - but the costume they stuck
him in was bloody awful - his red leather bondage outfit was just wrong, looked
incredibly uncomfortable and the worst part was the stupid mask - it's supposed
to be a cowl, not a beanie pulled over the eyes! Reminded me more of Dumb Donald
from Fat Albert than a super hero. The fight sequences went with the somewhat
run of the mill wire style, with too much on the slo mo stylised camera angles.
Casting Michael Clarke Duncan as Kingpin was fine, other than.. Kingpin isn't
supposed to be some super duper fighter. Best thing about this was Colin Farrell's
Bullseye other than giving him an ugly silly tattoo on his forehead rather than
a mask. Jennifer Garner's Electra had potential to be a cool character but fell
trap to the Hollywood curse of "I am a tough female character who by the
end of the film becomes a wussy" 6 out of 10
Dirty
Deeds
Cat's rating and comment: Definitely a fun film. I don’t
know how historically accurate it was but I remember Weet-Bix packets like that
from when I was a kid, I loved the old Qantas footage and the accents and expressions
were great. The performances were great and the storyline interesting. 9 out
of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: very Australian, very good, bit
violent but very much enjoyed it. Bryan Brown and John Goodman, set in 1969,
and the pokies and who ripped them off, seedy underworld oh and Sam Neil is
in it as a bent cop. 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it yet.
Down
with love
Cat's rating and comment: Lovely little retro hit. I adore
those Rock Hudson, Doris Day romantic comedies. And that’s probably my
only complaint; this was a little bit too knowing & hard edged to be a real
tribute film. Although the telephone scene with the split scene was funny I
sat up and thought ‘this is a bit out of place’ at that point. Renee
Zellweger & Ewan McGregor are fabulous & had nice chemistry. I know
it was a bit of a spoof but the explanation was a little long winded & ridiculous.
On the plus side; Ewan has a lovely voice & the soundtrack was fabulous.
The wardrobe was adorable. The side-kicks were a nice match (always important
in these films). And it all ended happily despite any last minute hitches. Not
quite as fabulous as I hoped but still highly entertaining. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I was not too enamoured with this
(ha ha pun intended). It was alright, cute, a bit talky talk and not top of
the line stuff from what we have seen. A bit over the top with all the innuendos.
Cute ending but nyah, I could leave it or take it. 6/10
Koala's rating & comment: I had big hopes for this, but
it was quite forced and the song sung by Renee and Ewan is almost painful to
watch .... In fact, I just looked at Darth Husbandious' comment and despite
a fierce loyalty for EM - feel that I have to say this was a little bit of a
flop ... 6 out of 10. Sorry...
Pocket's rating & comment: Haven't seen it.
Darth
Husbandious comment: Forced to watch this. My
wife began to realise I wasn't enjoying it much when I unconsciously began to
beat my head on the back of the seat about half and hour in. Contrived clap-trap.
Dreamcatcher
Cat's rating and comment: I was just thinking I haven’t
seen an atrocious film for a long time and then I remembered ‘DreamCatcher’.
Hmmm what shall I say. Stephen King is great at character details and that’s
what’s good in this film. I like the four buddies and some of their moments
together. The aliens and the violence were … well, completely gratuitous
and gross. And the military were pretty two-dimensional (and I love Tom Sizemore
& Morgan Freeman usually). A bit like ‘Signs’ … nice wrap
up but overall pretty silly. 4.5 out of 10. Funny that such a terrible film
has a longer review than some of my favourites …

Mile
Cat's rating and comment: I haven’t been a big fan of
Eminem’s music but the film looked quite interesting so I was keen to
see it. It was quite a good film. Eminem spent two hours wandering around looked
stunned and confused but it was believable. The rapping duels were quite interesting
even though these old ears had trouble picking up all of the words. I remember
reading about ‘dozens’ when I was in university and this seemed
to be the updated version of it. A lot more civilised than beating the crap
out of each other but I guess there was a bit of that as well. The story was
told in a well-known framework so it wasn’t hard to predict or to follow.
I will say that, having grown up in the eighties when Kim Basinger was pinned
to guys walls as the ultimate woman, it was slightly disturbing to see her playing
a mother figure. 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Well I was not sure if I wanted
to see this or not, thought it
might be interesting but not sure if I wanted to see it at the movies and I
did enjoy it. Don't like rap music except occasional cross overs which are more
songs than rap and occasionally eminem's songs do get stuck in my head and I
get very annoyed. His acting skills aren't the greatest, he seems always slightly
slow and the sex scene was a laugh, he looked very surprised as if not sure
what was happeneing. But good flick. 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Saw this on the plane and enjoyed
it. Eminem was surprisingly good although I gather that the character he portrayed
was quite different to the real mysoginistic guy he is in real life. The final
"battle" was great, and I really do like the song "Lose yourself"
even though I'm not a huge rap fan. 7.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating and comment: Thought this film was good stuff.
Eminem's film debut was definitely better than various other crossover movie
stars - and the film was obviously trying to be "gritty" although
after all that he goes through, Ifound the end result a little..anti-climactic?
Kim Basinger plays trailer trash mom with convincing gusto - as does Britney
Murphy as a do-anything-to-get-ahead tramp. Obviously the rap battles are the
drawcard to this film and they definitely live up to the hype although it seems
a shame the theme song "Lose yourself" didn't really make it INTO
the film. 7.5 out of 10
Emperor's
New Groove
Cat's rating and comment: Nice little morality play about an
emperor learning not to be so self involved when he is turned into a llama by
the evil witch. David Spade is hysterically funny, John Goodman is nice and
gentle and I liked the animation style. 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: very cute and funny and sweet, who
wouldn't want to be turned into a llama? 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Thought it was cute - didn't
love it, but maybe that was because Pocket talked it up too much. ;) I liked
some of the music though - Run Llama Run is too cute. 7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating and comment: Thought this movie was great;
reminded me alot of Lucasarts 'Day of the Tentacle' game. the humour is very
in your face and off beat, lots of visual gags and sardonic wit. The simple
plot is easily forgotten by all the fun in front of you. Animation is a lil
loud, but it goes well with the storyline. Another hit from Disney. 8.5 out
of 10.
Enigma
Cat's rating and comment: I heard the comment that this was
terrible because it was like a BBC drama … I like BBC dramas!! The costuming
was great .. I thought Jeremy Northam was excellent as the bad guy (lots of
narrowing of eyes). And Dougray Scott & Kate Winslet were brilliant. Very
enjoyable. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Haven't seen this. [Comment
from Koala: Frog are you sure you haven't seen this?]
Koala's rating & comment: I enjoyed this. A lot. A lot
of people have criticised it, bagged it for not doing Alan Turing justice. People
should just deal with the fact that it's a movie, it's a fictional piece - it's
not pretending to be fact. Dougray Scott was wonderful as was Kate Winslet.
Saffron Barrows does what she always does - looks beautiful, aloof and alluring
and she was fine at that. All in all very suspenseful and well-told. 8.5 out
of 10.

Koala's rating & comment: I really enjoyed this film. Longer
review to come. 9 out of 10. Click here for the transcript
of the MSN discussion with Pocket on the movie. Warning:
massive spoilers.
Frog's rating & comment: haven't seen it.
Pocket's rating & comment: Bloody awesome really, it had
comparisons to Minority Report but I really enjoyed it a whole lot
more. Kinda wannabe Brave New World at times, but didn't get too caught up in
trying to be something it wasn't - it was just a well put together movie with
what I thought was solid acting and awesome action sequences. Good use of wire
along with stylised special effects to keep pace with the fighting, with a healthy
sense of both "as if" cries from the audience, along with "actually
yeah that's probably the case". Costumes were fantastic and I found myself
walking around in black scowling a lot wishing I too was a Cleric. Watch out
for the swordfight sequence at the end between Diggs and Bale - perhaps one
of the most original displays of "f**k off i'm the best there is"
one on one combat displays ever! Coolness. 8.5 out of 10
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Koala has kooky tastes so
I wasn't sure about this film (sorry Koala). Having watched it, I thought it
was excellent. Christian Bale is hunky and full of pathos. Some great acting
from the Gordon Setter pup (seriously). Plus an interesting premise that was
not overworked. Borrowed a bit from the "Gattaca school of costume and visual
design" but that is not a bad thing. Score 7 out of 10. Babe factor 8 out of
10 (Sean Bean is also there in a small role).
P's rating and comment: Although i normally don't agree with
koala on anything, especially when she is strongly recommending it (j/k). I
have to say this is an exception. Although it's like a combination of 1984,fahrenheit
451 and Brave New World, but it's nicely done. The fighting scenes were really
cool. I have not much feelings towards Christian Bale, He sometimes over-act
abit, but this time he eas great.Oh, and i like Bale's son. He did't have a big
part though. 8 out of 10.
Ever
After
Cat's rating and comment: My favourite scene in Ever After
is when the gypsy tells her she can take anything she can carry. And I'm planning
on having a pair of wings made up to wear around the house. This film makes
me smile. 9 out of 10
Frog's rating and comment:A beautiful sweet lovely film. I
love this take on the Cinderella
story, a feisty middle class girl fighting back for what is hers and falling
in love with a prince. A prince who does not want to be a prince and is taught
about ruling. A nice ugly sister and a ugly beautiful sister. Lovely! Very funny!
I loved the bit at the ball where the servitor and one of the sister's neigh
at each other. 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I know this is an oldie but Cat,
Frog and I watched it together again recently and it was so sweet. I love Drew
Barrymore in this movie. The settings are wonderful, the costumes are fantastic
and the music lovely. Dougray Scott, he of the bizarre name and the Codpiece
From Hell, is surprisingly appealing as the Prince. Scott assumes an accent
very different from his real accent which is always impressive when it works.
8.5 out of 10 - mostly because I'm such a sucker for fairytales.
Pocket's rating & comment: Really entertaining stuff, you
really like Drew barrymore's character and it was a nice twist on the Cinderella
story. costumes were gorgeous, although I wasn't a fan of Dougray myself.. but
he didn't do TOO bad a job. 8/10.
The
Exorcist (2001)
Cat's rating and comment: This was the first time I had seen
the Exorcist. The surrounding storyline was very interesting and eerie particularly
the scenes in Persia .. BUT .. Most of the possession scenes were graphic and
disgusting, not scary, just revolting. It would have been a much better film
without them. 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Well I was dragged to see this too
cause nothing else was on and I don't like scary films but this was more gross
and disgusting than scary. Glad I saw because now I know how the film goes but
won't be seeing it again in a hurry 6 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: We saw this because everything
else was sold out and I don't think we could bear to see "Say it isn't
so". Normally I'm such a chicken and don't like horror but I found this
quite plot-driven and suspenseful. It was also a lot sadder than I expected.
Funny to see/hear Tubular Bells. 8 out of 10.
The
Family Man
Cat's rating and comment: haven't seen it
Frog's rating and comment: Typical film of man seeing what
would have happend. I prefer Rachel
Griffith's Me Myself and I to this one but cute, quite cute. 6 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Sentimental, well-acted although
a little cliched. Not much else to say. I enjoyed it but didn't love it. 6.5
out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: It was a nice film, kinda a
sappier version of Groundhog day I guess. I liked it, thought it had a lot going
for it but then it also didn't seem to stay in my head. I am a Nicholas Cage
fan but it wasn't enough I guess. 6.5 out 10.
Final
Fantasy: The Spirits within
Cat's rating and comment: Wow. The animation is amazing with
so much detail in the texture of the characters' skin and their movements. At
times I forgot I was watching animation. The love-story was wonderful, the characters
believable and the plot line just obscure enough to let you make up your own
mind. There could have been more explanation about the phantoms but there is
some danger in making it too complicated to follow. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Finally saw this on DVD and won't
say that I found an animated character cute (even if I did), great animation,
that guy who is in charge of facial hair animation did a good job. Never played
the game and knew nothing about it but enjoyed this film lots. 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I have read the appalling reviews
for this movie but I really loved this. It looked wonderful, the characters
were very, very likeable. The characters were convincing despite people blathering
on that they found the use of 'famous' voices distracting. I'll go on the record
and tell you that I found the love story between Gray and Aki to be very romantic
in the true sense of the word. I'm not sure how it's possible for CGI characters
to have 'chemistry' but this couple had chemistry. For a longer spiel / rambling
waffley thing, click here. 9 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I really enjoyed this dispite
the bagging it got from the critics. The plot was on the whole pretty cool,
(except the whole Gaia thing) but it was amazing to watch and characters were
likable. The CG detail was absolutely amazing, right down to skin grains and
pock marks.. movement was good, all and all a great visual ride. 8 out 10.
Finding

Cat's rating and comment: People writing on old typewriters
and following their dreams. It looked great and felt great. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment:Enjoyable, interesting film, nice
to see Anna Pacquin getting work,
she's a sweet actress. 6 & 1/2 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Very low key, but well acted
and has a great soundtrack. I thought the confrontation scene in the classroom
was particularly impressive. 8 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I actually loved this film,
I thought it was better than his previous effort of Good Will Hunting. The characters
are all very likable although I found Jamal to be a litle wooden - and Sean
Connery was very convincing as the mentor writer. I laughed when I read the
billing "Sean Connery, F Murray Abraham, Ana Paquin, and Busta Rhymes"
8 out 10.
Finding
Nemo
Cat's rating and comment: ‘Mate’. ‘Mate’.
‘Mate’. I really enjoyed this. Nemo is very cute. And okay, it was
thoroughly predictable formula stuff but the Australian touches were fabulous
and I loved the sea-turtles. Dory’s forgetfulness reminded me of my mother
but she made me giggle, particularly when she spoke whale. Lovely heart-warming
stuff. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: LOVED THIS FILM! Shall I say it
again LOVED IT!! So so cute, had to see it twice I liked it so much! Very cute
PIXAR film. Sweet and funny though I had watched a trailer for it on my Monsters
Inc DVD and one of the scenes was cute but didn't appear. Oh well. Ellen de
Generes very cute as the sidekick. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming
swimming. Very cute story about letting go, not holding on, letting people try
things for themselves. My favourite bit would be the talking to whales bit.
And of course Bill Hunter is in it, how could he not be?? 10/10
Koala's rating & comment: loved it. Saw it twice. :) Loved
the look, the accents - Dory, Marlin and Nemo were a delight. Got all choked
up and teary :) 9 out of 10.
Darth Simious comment: Professing to be amazed by the animation
is something of a cliche, but cliches be damned, amazed I was. Finding Nemo
made me a bit homesick - there are not enough plain-speaking blokes called Bruce
in this country. I enjoyed it immensely (but not the squealing of the 3 year
old right behind my left ear (although I was gratified that it worked for them
too)). I am always afraid that Pixar will cater more for adult tastes than those
of children, making something too wordly and sharp, but I am always happy that
they don't. A good story, well and humorously told. The Sydney sea-gulls ("Mine!
Mine!") made it for me.

Cat's rating and comment: love the look and feel of this film.
It's very easy to get submerged in this world; lots of stainless steel and clean
lines. I'm glad they didn't use the social commentary bit over the credits (about
all the geniuses with birth defects who might never have been born). 9 out of

Frog's rating and comment: One of my favourite films, can watch
this many many times and still get caught up in the drama of it all, very scary
how much keeps coming true in our real lives. How many years away is all this
from us?? As Pocket comments for a futuristic film it is quite retro/50's in
the clothing. Loved the twists and turns! 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: "Stylish" is the word
that springs to mind. Poor old Jude Law, I liked his character a lot. Cat and
Frog will tell you that you shouldn't sit near Koala the Spoiler Blurter if
you haven't seen a film yet ...... 8 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Suits were by Armani from what I understand,
and it's a very visually stylish film. I really liked the suits. Had a unsusal
retro/ 40's feel to it, whilst also being quite modern; the cinemetography was
excellent, and strong acting performances all round. Story was original and
really not that unbelievable as commentary for the future. good stuff. 8/10.
[According to Anonymous - suits were by Prada]
Get

Cat's rating and comment: It’s generally nice to watch
a film that shows life imitating art .. and uses a familiar story to reference.
Gives an extra dimension to the film. Likeable performances, quite enjoyed the
song Kirsten Dunst ‘writes’ for the play, and it all ends up happily.
6 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Love the songs, love the premise,
Kirstin Dunst gorgeous as ever and funny and well typical story but still fun
to see Shakespeare made modern. 7 & 1/2 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I enjoyed this a lot. The lead
guy was weird looking, I could have done without the punch sequence but the
intro song "Love will keep us together" is cute and the "Swingtown
Lads" were hilarious, Shane West was adorable, the songs The Girl Inside
and Dream of Me and all the songs used in Midsummer Night's Dream were wonderful
- particularly Hermia. 8 out of 10 for entertainment value.
Pocket's rating & comment: I liked this - am a real teen
movie fan and this one I found was excellent. Good choice of music, funny and
the jokes towards boybands (Swing town Lad's "Love Scud" cracked me
up)and everyone was very likable except perhaps there was a litle too much Martin
Short, who's character was growing rather tired throughout the film. 8 out of
10.
Goldmember
Cat's rating and comment: Heh heh heh … I haven’t
laughed that much in a film for a long time. The characters are ridiculous,
Mike Meyers is hysterical and I still love Seth Green. Looking forward to the
next instalment. It’s not neurosurgery but a person can only handle so
much surgery in one lifetime. The Fat Bastard is still hideous. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: See Koala... Won't see it either,
only saw 1 and don't like stupid fart and sex jokes
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it, won't see it
due to an irrational loathing of Mike Myers.
Greenfingers
Cat's rating and comment: This is a fabulous film. It’s
chock full of wonderful characters. It’s beautiful. It’s a lovely
quirky storyline. All the elements worked together. If you’re looking
for a nice, gentle, feel-good film this is it. It’s not a blockbuster
and it’s not going to make a big splash but if you get a chance to see
it … do. 9.5 out of 10.

A
Guy Thing
Cat's rating and comment: Oh wow this was an unexpected treat.
Usual set-up; up-tight conservative guy is about to get married then meets the
girl of his dreams. Of course the girl of his dreams turns out to be his fiancée’s
cousin. Julia Stiles was wonderfully whacky, going from one ridiculous job to
the next … hula dancer, toll collector. And of course it’s immensely
satisfying that everyone ends up happy at the end. 7.5 out of 10

Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
Cat's rating and comment: Saw this in Belgium with French & Dutch
subtitles which were a little distracting. It was lovely and very faithful to
the book and is just as I had imagined Hogwarts. It lacked a certain something
though. 7 out of 10
Frog's rating and comment: (see Cat's review) It was too faithful
to the book that you could see what they had left out and so it just did not
seem to flow too much and yes double subtitles are distracting. Fun but without
that certain something 7.5 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I had such mixed feelings about
it. I loved the books so much and the movie looked beautiful and the actors
were all incredibly wonderful - but it was just a straight retelling of the
book. I know that JK Rowling was quite strict about how the movie was told but
I guess I think that what works on the page doesn't necessarily work on the
screen and the little touches that made the books gorgeous were missing. That
being said - look and feel-wise it was wonderful. Can't rate this one.
Pocket's rating & comment: I think this movie had alot
of baggage to deal with; the fact the film had to follow the book to a t is
actually a good example of why authors are not always the best screenplay writers.
Visually it's quite amazing and very faithful to the book in every sense, which
unfortunately is it's downfall. All characters are look great, the quiddich
match is great to watch and the film does have alot of atmosphere, although
it unfortunately does lack the spellbinding (no pun intended)charm the book
has that just grabs you. 7 out of 10.
Harry
Potter & the Chamber of Secrets
Cat's rating and comment: After being slightly disappointed
with the first film I was concerned about seeing the second. I knew it would
be enjoyable but wouldn't quite blow me away. Perhaps it's because they added
a few action sequences, or that the second book is a bit darker than the first,
but this played better and was a lot more exciting. It probably helped that
it's been so long since I read the book I had forgotten the ending and was sitting
on the edge of my seat for the last twenty minutes or so. And the spiders were
really scary!! 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Framed by a distracting beginning
and a trite ending this film sucked me in (no distracting subtitles) and I enjoyed
every moment (once I got passed the beginning!) and enjoyed the thrills and
spills and the scares and the laughs. Ron was great as usual with his humour
and being scared, lots of great moments there! Throughly a good film, better
than the first (that's what they are all saying but I agree)
Koala's rating & comment: As this is the weakest of the
four novels to date, and I wasn't enamoured of the first movie - I had no or
low expectations for this movie. Accordingly, I found it entertaining enough.
Like the first movie it hits all of the key plots from the novel, whisking you
from plot to plot without really giving you any time to linger and enjoy. The
three leads put in a likeable performance, Dobby the ugly house-elf is probably
weeping CGI tears of rage as he eyeballs Gollum and Kenneth Branagh is rather
lovely. Unfortunately, as with the first movie, there was little interpretation
taken with the material and we have yet another linear retelling of the novel
with the drawback that it doesn't have all the lovely little touches from the
novel. It's a bad sign when I look at my watch three times during a movie and
start hoping for it to end. Then again I didn't hate it. 6 out of 10.
Head over

Cat's rating and comment: I don't regret seeing it and can
find something good in any film. It was a little predictable, the leads were
okay but not fabulous and the models obviously enjoyed themselves. 5.5 out of
10.
Frog's rating and comment: haven't seen it.
Koala's rating & comment: Sarah O'Hare's character was
awful but the ditzy models really saved this movie because Freddy Prinze Jr
and Monica Potter were pretty awful .... I quite liked the use of Ronan Keating's
song Rollercoaster. How embarrassing is that? Big deductions for dog and toilet
gags .... ewww.....5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: This was a really stupid movie.
Characters made no sense really, and Sarah O'Hare should be caned for allowing
Australians to be depicted like that. However, there was something about this
movie that I actually just thought was cute and enjoyable and i rate it high
just cos..I liked it for no apparent reason! 7 out of 10.
Hero
Cat's rating and comment: Wow … what a beautiful looking
film!! I loved the colour-coding of emotions, loved the fight scenes, loved
the casting. Jet Li & Tony Leung are just lovely (not that I really need
to say that). It was an interesting structure with the scenes being played over
and over with different perspectives. 9.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: To come.
Koala's rating & comment: Loved it - but I love slow, luscious
films with layers and gorgeous scenery and wire-fu and dramatic, sweeping music.
How can one resist Tony Leung and the alluring Maggie Cheung? Jet Li was good
- great to see him back in a proper movie instead of his Hollywood crap. 9 out
of 10.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Ok, some will tell you this
film is slow and has no plot (I was embarrassingly unaware of the Chinese historical
basis for it). I say their pacing is all wrong. This film is languid and meditative.
The fight scenes are great and the whole film (as with all of Zhang Yimou's
work) is just so much gorgeousness on screen. The chick fight in the autumn
forest is just phenomenal to look at. 8 out of 10. Babe factor 6 out of 10 (for
the sultry eyes of Tony Leung and the brief naked butt shot of Jet Li at the
start).
High
Crimes
Cat's rating and comment: Oh my goodness .. Ashley Judd discovers
she doesn't know who her husband is (again!!). I suspect military justice is
nothing like this but it made for an interesting film. It was quite suspenseful.

Hockey Night (1984)
Koala's rating & comment: well I know this
one is an oldie which no one owns anymore, but as a Megan Follows fan of old,
I have always loved this story about Cathy Yarrow (Megan Follows) who moves
to Parry Sound in Canada and tries to fit in. When there is no girl's ice hockey
team, she joins the boy's team - causing complications. It also doesn't help
that she falls for the dreamy, dark-eyed, long-lashed Spear Kozak (Yannick Bisson)
- star player on the team who really should be focussing on getting into the
NHL by the time he is 17 rather than falling for the alluring young goalie.
Rick Moranis is in a surprisingly straight role of coach - which he does very
well. Megan Follows is an excellent actress in this - rebellious and frustrated
without being bratty, Bisson doesn't have a huge amount to do except look good
and be a Canadian Sensitive New Age Athlete - but he's very good as well. Directed
by Paul Shapiro, the movie makes Canada look very cold and somewhat bleak -
but the performances are all warm and engaging. There was a time I would watch
this movie every day before going to highschool, I just loved it so much. :)
I think I knew all the lines. 9 out of 10. Click here

Hong
Kong Cinema Ads
Cat's rating and comment: Haven't seen them.
Frog's rating and comment: Haven't seen them.
Koala's rating & comment: OK, I can cope with the "I
now pronounce you man and movie" ad - except that it doesn't work.
Not only do many HK people love to answer their phones during a movie, they
like to actually TALK during the movie too. Besides, that ad stopped being funny
after the first time I saw it. The Brother Bear eh? variation is quite
cute, even though Zeitgeist thought it was lame. I cannot stand the
Cityline ad with the two guys stranded on a desert island trying to book movie
tickets. My all time pet hate - the FANCL house ads with the painfully thin,
gorgeously sparkling but morally reprehensible Gigi Leung endorsing those profoundly
toxic chemical products like Fenatty, Break and Burn, Tense Up and Slimfast.
Where's a Therapeutic Goods Administration when you need one!??? As to the movie
trailers "montage", I agree that they're a little bit dated. P just
reminded me of that hideous "Madison's" ad ... with the breathy voice
that sounds like it's advertising a porno movie or something ..... Madisons
.... *gasp* .... ;)
P's comment: ."i don't want to write a review about those
stupid ads."
The
Hours
Cat's rating and comment: This is another weird Oscars thing
.. how do you decide who was the lead and who was the support in this film ..
I’m not saying that Ms Kidman didn’t deserve recognition because
I thought it was a great performance .. but the structure makes her role the
support and the other two the lead in my mind .. but you’re not allowed
to have two leads of the same sex in a film it seems. I became very emotionally
involved in this film, I got quite teary toward the end when Clare Danes gave
Julianne Moore a hug. I liked the costuming and the contrast between the three
time zones. I thought the performances were excellent (all of them!!). And I
was nicely surprised by the plot points (I was starting to expect everyone to
commit suicide) .. 8.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very good, interesting, intriguing,
now I have finally pulled Mrs
Dalloway off my bookshelf Three stories of three women who are seemingly going
crazy and with the way it started with Virginia Wolf at the beginning going
for a "swim" you had to wonder how would the other two end up. They
all kept crying at really odd points and doing strange things but well I really
don't want to spoil it but definetly a lovely film and as much as Nicole Kidman
does a very good performance in this film, I don't see why she is main actress
and the other two are supporting especially Julianne Moore who did a great part
and Ed Harris was fantastic! 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Haven't seen it. Looks a little
earnest for me and my brains are currently mush.
Male's rating & comment (a.k.a. Darth Simious): I enjoyed
this film but the intellectualised lesbianism began to pall, particularly when
you found out that the Claire Daines character was artificially conceived, despite
all of the Meryl Streep character's palaver about how much she loved the Ed
Harris character when she was young
(obviously not quite enough) and that was the one, bright shining moment of
happiness in her life (obviously her nice, bourgeois, flower-laden, antique-filled,
artsy, gourmet yuppy food eating NY life since then must just have sucked).
Anyway ... On the whole I liked it - it was intelligent and provocative with
no one star dominating (which is a nice change, although Nicole Kidman was obviously
supposed to be the drawcard). I thought Nicole Kidman was good (but the nose
was better), but not nearly as good as Julianne Moore. A tasteful exploration
of the awakening of her feelings done in dimly lit soft-focus may well have
made this the hit of the year - with something for everyone. An opportunity
missed. But the great unanswered question was ... did the Julianne Moore character
properly seize the opportunity to flee the oppression of 1950s USA and enjoy
the sapphic delights of Canada? ... or was being a neatly dressed librarian
enough to satisfy her longings?
How
to lose a guy in 10 days
Cat's rating and comment: Giggle giggle giggle. All the things
you shouldn’t do when dating .. applied with a sledgehammer. And while
it was obvious where this was going it was a nice journey. Kate Hudson &
Matthew McConaughey worked well together & made a very attractive couple.
I always enjoy the way that Hollywood makes gorgeous people seem just like the
rest of us. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Kate Hudson, so very like her mother,
was just plain awful, well not her acting, her character. You had to feel sympathy
for the guy because she was oh so very cruel and hurtful and the things she
did!! I don't know, both selfish characters, wanting what they want, though
she did it to help a
friend out rather than for a promotion but she needed it to keep her job. But
she quits and becomes a "real" writer and they live happily every
after. 6.5 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: I expected more from this - probably
because it had "Don't dream it's over" as sung by Sixpence None the
Richer in the trailer. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind cliches in romantic
comedies - that's what they're made of, the "Everybody hurts" moment,
the guy / girl running through traffic / the street to get to the true love
.... but this movie felt really flat. I never really believed the chemistry
and I felt like they were just going through the motions. Very disappointing.

The
Honourable Wally Norman
Cat's rating and comment: Maybe I shouldn’t post my review
for a month because we saw it on a preview. I loved this. It’s classic
Australian humour, taking the piss out of our politicians and the underdog winning.
Kevin Harrington was fab as the naïve Wally, thrown into an election for
local member. The supporting cast includes Shaun Micallef & Allan Cassell
(who played Harold in ‘SeaChange’) and are all pretty excellent.
Lot’s of visual jokes so keep your eyes open for signs etc … 9 out
of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: This was a great film and to top
it off I saw it for free! ;) Lots of good laughs, lots of great Australian actors,
making fun of Australian culture - most of all policians. 8.5 out of 10 (almost
a 9)
Koala's rating & comment: Haven't seen it.
Hulk
Cat's rating and comment: to come, although Cat had this to
say on the MSN discussion of Hulk: "I'm just
waiting for Bernardo Bertolucci to remake superman now". It was a
beautifully shot film. I liked the way the footage all flowed together …
but ultimately I wasn’t there for beauty. This is a story about a guy
who turns green when he gets pissed off. This is a story about a guy who slams
his fist into things and is sort of the human equivalent of King Kong. So I’ll
have to use two scales. 10 out of 10 for cinematography & special effects.
6 out of 10 for my overall rating. Not bad but not quite on the money.
Frog's rating and comment: to come. See the MSN
discussion of Hulk in the interim.
Koala's rating & comment: Found parts of it great, as you'll
see on the MSN discussion of Hulk, I thought Eric Bana's
performance was excellent and the special effects were good. I read a review
with which I agree which says that is more of a monster movie than a super hero
movie - which may explain why the character of Betty was such a dewey-eyed,
gooey-eyed girl who doesn't really do anything. Zeitgeist liked it
more than I did - I feel bad because there was much I did like, but it was spoiled
by the stupid stupid fight at the end, the annoying Paternal Conflict Syndrome
and Betty's lack of layers (and no I don't mean that she didn't speak Mandarin,
complex and simplified ;) 6 out of 10.
Pocket's rating and comment: haven't seen it yet.
Zeitgeist's rating and comment: I really enjoyed this film.
Ang Lee is (with Soderbergh) one of the finest directors working in America.
He took on a big ask with his film, and gosh darn it if he didn't just pull
it off, too. Except for the end fight with "Super Nolte". Eric Bana
was very good, as was Sam Elliot and Jennifer Connelly. I found Nick Nolte quite
unsettling. It tackles big themes like emotional repression, family breakdown
and the revisiting of the "sins of the fathers" and technological
responsibility. Don't believe the negativity over the CGI Hulk. He looks great,
verrry green <grin> and quite expressive in a whole body kind of way,
not just facially. Not quite as good as (but very different to) Gollum in "Two
Towers" (just goes to show how fantastic and important Andy Serkis was
to the character of Gollum). Ang Lee uses primary colours well to reference
the "four colour" comic world he is borrowing from and his use of
split-screen, focus shifting and transitional shots is tour de force. I loved
the classic film references: Frankenstein (actually I think "Bride of")
and King Kong especially. The film struggles a little for emotional depth sometimes,
given that all the characters (bar Nolte) are so buttoned down and the ending
is a little silly, but overall a really good film. 8 out of 10. Babe factor
7 out of 10 (I think Eric Bana is cute).

I
Am Sam
Cat's rating and comment: I admit I had a tear in my eye when
we finished watching this film. It’s a bit of a tearjerker but it has
a happy ending. Sean Penn is great as the disabled dad fighting to keep custody
of his daughter. And I’ve always had a soft spot for Michelle Pfeiffer.
8.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very very sad and sweet and lovely
and I cried (so did Cat and Jati!) The relationship between father and daughter
was so bittersweet, since she found out through interractions with outsiders
that her father was not normal and well that hurt their relationship but their
struggle to stay together and be together and well it was lovely. 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it - but I own the

Ice
Age
Cat's rating and comment: I thought it was really cute. Loved
the characters (particularly the Mammoth). The animation was great and the story
was lovely. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: This is a very cute funny film.
I liked it alot and part of me liked it a little bit more then Shrek cause there
was not the silly toilet humour of Shrek. (Don't get me wrong I thought Shrek
very good and funny just some bits not as enjoyable) Very enjoyable funny film.
All about bonding and mateship and all that. Very sweet and silly. 7 out of
10
Koala's rating & comment: I liked this better than Shrek
and while Monsters Inc had a few moments that were funnier overall - I found
Ice Age more consistent and absorbing. Great prehistoric 'road' movie. 6 out
of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Entertaining, although I do
worry with animated films that sooner or later they're going to lose their appeal.
This one definitely had it's moments and was quite watchable from beginning
to end - John Legzuizamo was great as always as the comical element to Ray Romano's
dry wit. Dennis Leary..well ... animated or not plays himself, but at least
he doesn't go on crazy neurotic tangents. The baby of course is the cute element,
with the weird looking rat thing as the main side comical element of the piece..
I enjoyed it, but not immensely. 7.5/10.
Identity
Cat's rating and comment: Agatha Christie and Alfred Hitchcock
eat your heart out. Very creepy, and I love those scenes where someone gets
killed and the entire cast appear from different directions. A really good cast
working together brilliantly. Nicely cut together to keep you guessing ‘til
the end. 9.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Not bad as I feared, thought it
was going to be much much more scary and horrible. The baseball bat scene was
yucky but most of the deaths, well actually all the deaths took place off-screen
and you only saw the aftermaths. Could guess /some/ stuff but didn't predict
the ending, that was a twist, interesting. Covered my eyes in some parts in
expectation of what was going to happen but not too bad. 6/10
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it.
Importance
of Being Earnest
Cat's rating and comment: Rupert Everett is fabulous again!!
It’s a silly romantic comedy full of mistaken identity and deceit. Of
course you know how it’s going to end but that’s part of the fun
of these sort of films. It isn’t brain surgery but it’s a fun romp
.. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: All I knew of these plays were the
famous quotes - "I never travel without my diary. One should always have
something sensational to read in the train." etc, lots of fun and it's
amazing they don't twig before but very very fun and of Rupert Everett gorgeous
as ever and Reese Witherspoon a darling! 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment:to come.
Pocket's rating & comment: Translating great plays into
movies sometimes can work... and sometimes...can not. Problem with this film
is the same thing "The Crucible" suffered from - has a great
cast and tells the story, but a lot of the depth of the play is lost. Screenwriting
is a tricky business - Something JK Rowling should realise - that different
media require different elements to succeed. Watchable and entertaining - Rupert
Everert was great, in fact all the actors did a great job, it was just the execution
was flat and you're better off catching a local theatre company's interpretation
than this film if you want to really appreciate Wilde's work. 6.5 out of 10

Cat's
rating and comment: Without telling you all what happens …..
waaaauuuugggghhhh about the ending. But I still loved it. Excellent cast (as
Koala would say … ‘Tony Leung has such soulful eyes’). Interesting
set-up: Mob-man & cop sent undercover in each other’s organisations
for ten years and begin to lose track of who they really are. It had a great
atmosphere, I got totally involved in the whole world. You know it’s a
good film if you forget you’re reading the sub-titles. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Great film, though the alternative
ending, well I was hoping (block your eyes anyone who hasn't seen it) the other
guy died and so it was alternative that way. Caught up in it, very suspenseful
though I was a little confused at the beginning. 8 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: Really enjoyed it - shot in HK
with cool scenes of the city and the 10,000 Buddha Monastery. Tony Leung and
Andy Lau were great, the guy who played Sam and the inspector were also fab
and it was edgy and suspenseful. Edison Chan looks like a bit of a cutie. Click

Pocket's rating & comment: Awesome stuff - a great storyline
and fierce action sequences that keep you on the edge of your seat. As with
a lot of these films the female element is normally just there for.. no real
apparent reason (eye candy perhaps?)but the film is a very slick well crafted
piece of cinema. Good to see awesome action movies from other parts of the world.

Zeitgeist's rating and comment: Gripping film. Terrific acting
from the two leads (Tony Leung and Andy Chau) as well as the guys who played
Sam (the bad guy) and the Inspector (MFD). Complicated but cool plot and premise.
The underlying themes about environment¡¦s capacity to change our
innate selves was interesting too. No surprise that Hollywood has picked up
the rights to make a Western version of this. It was also cool to see Hong Kong
on screen. One caveat, other that to get ¡§prominent female canto-pop
star in the film¡¨, the psychiatrist subplot was entirely pointless.

Koala's rating & comment: Very good - I was expecting to
HATE it but it was a very clever prequel to the original which didn't treat
the audience like gullible idiots. Edison looks sexily haunting, Shawn Yue turned
in a performance which did does not betray Tony Leung's brilliance and the performances
by the actors who play Sam and Inspector Wong respectively were wonderful. Is
it just me or does Carina Lau kind of look like a fraggle??? 9 out of 10.

Koala's rating & comment: Quite good although not as good
as the first two. I have a real soft spot for Chen Dao Ming's amazing Mandarin
though ... it's just so .... crisp and Mandariny sounding :) He was very much
underused. Lots of Tony Leung which is always a good thing, Andy Lau wasn't
bad, Leon Lai (Oh oh, he was born in Beijing) didn't really have much
to do at all except look smug and wear JT Walsh-esque glasses. In terms of tying
the three together, I thought it did it rather well, although the movie was
rather overly ambitious. 7 out of 10.

Cat's rating and comment: Often films lose something when they're
translated to American and it would be nice to compare this to the original.
It played very well though. I liked the cast and the look of it. It was one
of those films that really drags you into its own world. I was dying for Al
Pacino to lie down and sleep toward the end of this. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: It just seemed to drag and I was
dying for Al Pacino to just GO TO SLEEP!!!! Robin Williams - he was good, weird
but good which he was supposed to be, sucha change not to see his comedic skills

Koala's rating & comment: What a gorgeous, richly textured
and deliciously alluring movie. It's so aloof and seductive with the deep colours,
wonderful music and lashings of unresolved sexual tension. Tony Leung and Maggie
Cheung are amazing in this movie and the music is to die for. OK, I'm gushing.

Koala's rating & comment: I enjoyed this although I didn't
kill myself laughing. Wheezy Joe was a classic ... but most of the gaglines

seen the witty banter done better - although this movie was better than most.

Cat's rating and comment: I was hoping this would be funnier.
The first half dragged a little, even though it had funny elements. The second
half on the other hand, moved along and had us chuckling away. Owen Wilson was
being Owen Wilson again (much the same character as in 'Shanghai Noon') which
is usually enjoyable. Eddie Murphy was being Eddie Murphy again .. which sometimes
wears thin but was fun in this instance. 5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Actually much better than I expected.
I thought typical stupid film and the beginning I kept thinking this, it took
a while to get started and most of the jokes seemed to have been used up on
the trailer but then I really got into it and it was lots of fun. I enjoyed
Owen Wilson, so intense and stupid. Eddie Murphy better than he has been in
recent times though still playing Eddie Murphy. 6 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it. Probably won't
because the trailer only made me laugh once - the sock comment.
The
Italian Job
Cat's rating and comment: Very cool. Minis aren’t very
mini these days they look more like a Honda Civic. But I digress. I know this
is a remake but I still enjoyed it. Rather enjoyed the cast particularly the
support cast like Seth Green & Jason Stratham. The car chase was good, the
safecracking was good (I don’t want to know about the accuracy). My only
complaint is Edward Norton that the cable company would turn up so quickly!!
7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Good, thrilling, heist movie. Sucks
you in - thieves who don't kill. Bad guys steals from the thieves and introduces
the killing. Great thrilling boat and car chases. Go and see. 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I enjoyed this. Shades of Ocean's
Eleven but stylish and fun. The acting between Mark Wahlburg and Charlize Theron
was a little wooden at times and Edward Norton looked like a scrawny pimpy version
of Sean Penn, but hey. Is it me or does Mark Wahlburg look vaguely constipated
when he is trying to emote ...? 7 out of 10.

Frog's rating and comment: Average, amusing in parts, mostly
but not all toilet humour which is a plus. That gets very boring but very silly
slapstick kind of stuff. The development of the relationship between Jason Lee
and Julia Stiles could have been explored a bit more. He sleeps with her and
then suddenly is willing to give up all for her, they have developed this great
relationship but you really don't see it. He it was obvious that he was not
suited to Selma Blair's character, the different family stuff, she being rich
and buys his clothes. His mother lives with her boyfriend/second husband in
a trailer. Doomed to failure also when he works for his fiance's father. 4/10

James
Bond: Die Another Day
Cat's rating and comment: Have I reviewed a Bond film on this
page already? I'm a bit of a fan so if I did I probably said it was wonderful.
I guess Bond is getting sillier and sillier .. I'm sure you couldn't start a
helicopter if it were really in freefall .. and he looked pretty healthy for
someone who had been tortured for 18 months but the references to previous Bond
classics were fun. There was press about the tribute to Ursula Andress' bikini
but I also liked the Union Jack parachute a la 'The Spy Who Loved Me' .. I'm
sure I missed quite a few of the nods so I'll have to see it again some time.
8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: haven't seen it.
Koala's rating & comment: Admittedly I'm not a huge James
Bond fan but I can enjoy a Bond movie but the last one I really enjoyed was
"Tomorrow never dies" with Michelle Yeoh. Since then, I've found them
lacklustre and just a little bit boring. I agree with Pocket's belief that James
Bond movies have gone past their expiry date. In the old days we needed them
for action, escapism, politically incorrect humour and chase sequences with
lots of explosions - these days, other movies can do all of this and better.
Pierce Brosnan is just too bland for my liking even though he was so adorable
in Remington Steele. Halle Berry was boring and while I gather she was striving
for 'perky', she came across as annoying more than anything else and extremely
unconvincing as an action goddess. She is also no Ursula Andress so I can only
thank my lucky stars that she wasn't singing "Under the mango tree"
when she emerged photogenically from the water in a bikini with a knife at her
belt. She was better here than in Swordfish though although that is really not
saying anything. The girl who played Miranda Frost clearly thought that being
an icy snow queen requires mimicking the mannerisms of a block of wood. Yawn.
That being said, I rather liked the guy who played Gustave Graves. What a waste
of Rick Yune who I thought was extremely appealing in "Snow falling on
cedars". That's right, let's get a gorgeous guy and make him incredibly
ugly - and stupid to boot. Only plusses were the fleeting shots of the HK skyline.
6 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: There is a very sad but brutal
tale to come from this movie, and that is Bond has no place in this day and
age. They'd be better off setting them off back in the 60's and keeping them
'hip' with Bond being the original swinger. Bond used to be the epitome of action
movie goodness, now he's just looking stale. Not sure whether to maintain the
politcally incorrect hedonistic themes, or the modern politically correct trends
of current flicks, this movie ends up failing on so many avenues and pisses
everyone off. Even the gadgets are ridiculous and not in a good way - they use
Ericsson mobile phones that your average teenaged drug dealer would scoff at;
next thing you know Bond will run out of prepaid credit!!! Product placement
is rampant everywhere with this latest installment. It's NOT Pierce Brosnan's
fault - everything is wrong with this film, I could blame it on the casting
director's taste in bringing in a very weak Halle Berry who looks like she's
obviously wielding a Prop rather than a real weopon; very unbelievable as a
secret agent and the flirty banter between her and Bond is painful. The writer's
choice of setting it in Korea??? And the characters...Miranda Frost - WTF is
her caper? She's useless and wears inappropriate gear and you just KNOW she's
there so there can be a "oh-look-two-chicks-fighting" scene at the
end. It's also hard to find decent bad guys these days - the whole "taking
over the world" theme is getting stale as well and Gustav Graves just never
quite looks as good as he does in the poster hanging up in the foyers of Hoyts.

Josie and

Cat's rating and comment: I can’t trash this film completely
because I liked the look of it … but it’s not the most intellectual
offering of the year. Female rock band is ‘discovered’ and used
to manipulate teens … well at least the plot makes sense. And pink really
IS the new red. 4 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: This film was on "The List"
but fell off it and glad I was when I
finally saw it on video. De Jour were great, I always love Seth Green, I would
almost see Austin Powers for him (almost) Disappointed in Parker Posey, always
liked her from Party Girl and You've got mail and this was pretty well the only
word for this film is SHOCKING! 3 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Oh my God - what was this? Only
redeeming features - video clips with Du Jour, the hilariously spot on spoof
of Boy Band clips and boy bands generally. This was a bad movie - the acting
was bad, the singing was bad, the story was bad - although both Cat and Frog
have pointed out that Parker Posey was much better in Party Girl - I remain
unconvinced as have not yet seen that movie. 3 out of 10.

Cat's rating and comment: Okay I'm a complete sucker for romantic
comedies. And can I have Meg Ryan's wardrobe please? However, it's kinda depressing
that film-makers feel that the only way to find a nice guy is to go back to
1876 .. what happened to the love is just around the corner thing? 8 out of
10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very fun, sweet and cute. Meg Ryan
looked and acted quite different, not as cute and chirpy as previous roles but
still did a good job. I really enjoyed this film and was not as depressed at
the end as I sometimes get with romantic comedies. Most enjoyable film. 7 1/2
out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Sweet, cute, fun, fluffy - problem
is Meg Ryan's kind of done the whole sweet, cute, fun and fluffy thing to death.
If you're in the mood for some sweet, cute, fun, fluffy Meg Ryan movies - I
think You've got mail does it better. I didn't feel a genuine chemistry between
Jackman and Ryan. 7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: This could have been a whole
lot better than it was, although it was watchable I can't stop thinking it kinda
hid from it's whole time travel storyline and didn't really want to address
the "f#$k's with your head" stuff time travel movies all have to deal
with (Bill and Ted still stands as the best one to deal with it thus far in
my book). The chemistry with Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman was there but not enough
development. Brekin Meyer was good as her out of work brother but he also tends
to always play himself too (except in.. the craft where he played himself but
was nasty, or clueless where he played himself but was..stoned) The whole subplot
with her boss was a lil bleech. I liked it, but not one to go "awww"
over with a loved one. 6.5/10
Kill Bill
Volume 1
Cat's rating and comment: Errr … right …. Well
Tarantino still hasn’t got over his self-indulgent streak. He just seems
to have edged further into graphic violence. Technically a good film but the
subject matter leaves something to be desired. Sort of like Charlie’s
Angels on crack with samurai swords. And there’s still another part to
it?!? 4 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: to come.
Koala's rating & comment: Oh dear. Not sure how to write
my review for this one. I can't stand Tarantino, I couldn't sit through Pulp
Fiction and haven't watched ANY of his other movies. In my view, his only redeeming
feature was the fact that he is a die-hard fan of "Chungking Express"
- one of my favourite movies of all time. That being said, I watched this movie
because (1) I love martial arts films; and (2) I love movies where girls kick
butt. Everyone told me the violence in this movie is so over the top and hammy
that you get desensitised, that after the first "bit", it's fine and
you laugh. In my case they were wrong, I am horribly horribly not good at coping
with gore - even fake gore, so I covered my eyes for most of the impalings,
decapitations and incredibly brutal beatings. What I also hated was an incredibly
upsetting attempted rape (and recounting of prior rapes) that took place while
Uma Thurman's character was in the hospital. It was just unnecessarily ugly
and horrible. So what was good about this movie? Why on earth would the squeamish
koala even consider giving it a good rating? Gore and violence aside - it was
a beautifully shot movie. The movie could have worked without all the gore and
violence as a martial arts piece. The fighting was excellent, the soundtrack
fabulous - particularly the funky flamenco/disco cover of "Please don't
let me be misunderstood", the unspeakably cool "Battle without
honour" song and a few other very very atmospheric tracks. I loved
the use of Georg Zamfir's panpipe piece "The Lonely Shepherd".
Standout moments - the fight in the snow at the end and Uma's amazing routine
with the samauri sword. 2 out of 10 for the unnecessary ugliness, 9 out of 10
for the fighting and the music.

Kiss of

Cat's rating and comment: Um .. where do I start? Luc Besson
has a habit of being remarkably violent in a guns and blood sort of a way ..
and it's kind of hard to show-case Jet Li's talent when he's sliding across
the room on a river of blood. And what the heck happened to Bridget Fonda. It
was slick looking but kind of empty and disappointing. 5 out of 10
Frog's rating and comment: Don't know if I have anything to
add to Cat or Koala's comments except I agree. 5 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Oh Jet. What happened to the
days of Once Upon a Time in China, My father is a Hero and Fist of Legend?????
What is WITH these awful Hollywood movies you keep making? Jet was ok, Bridget
Fonda was ghastly, Paris looked fantastic ..... but it was awful and violent
and the action in the movie completely wastes Jet Li's graceful wu shu talents.

Jessica Stein
Cat's rating and comment: It's not completely accurate to say
that I identified with the characters in this film but they were kind of familiar
.. and not just because they looked
and felt like they'd stepped off the set of Friends. Jessica is a little neurotic
but still sympathetic. And it was nice to see everything work out well at the
end. It was nice to see Scott Cohen playing a human (even though he's lovely
as a wolf). 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I enjoyed this film. I mean I was
not holding my sides because of split side laughing but it had some very funny
moments. Of course "Wolf" was one of the main actors so that was nice
to see him in a film. This film is very much a "talky" more talk than
action. This is not a criticism but probably not everyone's favourite type of
film. 8 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: Haven't seen it - probably won't.
A Knight's
Tale
Cat's rating and comment: Koala is quite correct, the girl
sux. Loved her clothes though. The other characters are spectacular; loved Paul
Bettany as Chaucer in particular. There were no big surprises in the plot but
the whole production was full of energy, looked great and had a wonderful soundtrack.
8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Loved it - even 2nd or 3rd viewing
and I agree with both Cat and Koala - the lead girl sucked! I heard she was
found DJ'ing at a party and they should have left her there. I preferred Kate
and would have liked her more developed. But overall fun film, Heath Ledger
great and his supporting cast were /fantastic/ 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I found this very entertaining
but absolutely loathed the female lead who really spoiled it for me. Kate, the
'other' female was much more interesting and well-portrayed. Heath Ledger was
great and his sidekicks were also very entertaining - I would have scored this
higher if it wasn't for the female lead being in the film so much. The Black
Prince was also very interesting. 6.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I really don't get why they
made this movie the way they did, still entertaining but for some reason because
of the subject matter and music Ikept thinking of Lady Hawke. Heath Ledger was
great and very likable; I agree the female lead was abit of a nothing character
(much hotter in 40 days) and you do kinda hope he'll go for his armourer (the
social commentary on sponsorship and product placement is clever). Rufus was
cool, he plays bad pretty well. 7/10
Lake Placid
Cat's rating and comment: Giggle .. How a salt-water croc got
to North America is completely beyond me .. but I was prepared to suspend disbelief
to see Betty White feeding a cow to the big beast. Oliver Platt was fabulous
too!! 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Oh a very silly film but I like
Oliver Platt and Betty White as the
oblivious in her own world woman feeding crocodiles is HILARIOUS. Not at all
scary, well ok huge crocodiles attacking helicopters is pretty scary but very
enjoyable 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: This movie is so funny. I heehee'd
all the way through it because it was just so entertainingly strange. Bill Pullman
was likeable, as was Bridget Fonda. I don't mind Oliver Platt and there was
genuine chemistry between Fonda and Pullman. 8.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: This was a way underrated movie;
it came out the same time as deep blue sea and i think alot of the sardonic
wit written in by Ally Mcbeal's David E Kelly was lost in the target audiences.
I actually find Oliver Platt to be as annoying as hell, so he really didn't
add to the joy of this film, but Bill Pullman was very likeable, as was his
deputy whom I can't remember but had lots of good one lines. You like Bridget
Fonda too, and while u can tell noone really stood out for their acting, they
all seemed to have a really good time. I find this is a movie that improves
the more times u watch it. 8.5/10

acted, all the cast were great but just something..... 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Get down, stay down movie. One
of the most depressing movies I've ever seen in my life but so amazingly acted
that I liked it in spite of myself. Just goes to show that Sydney-siders can
be JUST as dysfunctional and angsty as New Yorkers. =) 9 out of 10.
Zeigeist's rating and comment: Terrific film. The emotional
suspense and pressure this film creates is astounding. Fantastic acting from
all the main players (it is truly an ensemble piece). I liked the fact that
Peter Phelps' gay character was a real and morally questionable character, unlike
the cardboard cutout "happy happy joy joy" tokens you sometimes get.
Kerry Armstrong was beautifully brittle and the interweaving of plot and character
was masterful. Not always a cheerful film though <grin>. Shame the director
took so long between drinks (I think "Bliss" was his last film). 8.5

of way).

Frog's rating and comment: This film is great loved it, hilariously
funny and just a general feel good film. Seen it about 3 times and will see
it again and again. Loved Reese Witherspoon and she was so wide eyed and innocent
as she romped through to get into Harvard and then her fight back when she found
the seedy side. Loved it, simply fantastic and loved Luke Wilson. I want to
see it again. 8 & 1/2 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I found this incredibly heart-warming.
Much funnie than Clueless as people always seem to compare the two. Matthew
Davis was so deliciously awful in this and such a contrast from his amazing
role in Tigerland. I liked Luke Wilson - thought he nicely underplayed his character
and Reese Witherspoon was absolutely delightful in the lead role. She was really
convincing, likeable and bursting with love and heart. She's really a character
you can support and admire and the growth and development of the character is
very convincing. 8.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Good stuff, very entertaining
and fun to watch. Reese Witherspoon is great, and while, just as in things like
Big Daddy you don't take the legal side seriously, just watching her go through
the system is very funny. The soundtrack is also good as are the outfits and
it is a real feel good flick. 8/10

film. It might not be high class drama but it definitely is a story with feeling.
Pulls you in, I found myself almost hissing at the "baddies" in the
film and of course cheering for the good guys. Our whole row was laughing our
heads off it was just so beautifully corny. My friend classed it as a chick

I was. 8 out of 10 for delightful frothiness and snaps!

Cat's rating and comment: I know that the Star Wars films are
not really known for their realistic dialogue but it was really nice to see
Hayden Christensen being a little less wooden (in contrast to the carpentry).
Great performances. The drama and relationships are well set up. And a bit of
a tearjerker. 9.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: haven't seen it.
Koala's rating & comment: Reviews were mixed for this one
and I admit I saw it out of curiosity to see whether Hayden Christensen is any
better in this than he was as Anakin in Clones. He was. Kristin Scott Thomas
was very good in the role of the hurting mother and wife, Jena Malone was good
as the curious and kittenish Elissa and Kevin Kline was very good in the role
of George although he did have a slight tendency to purple prose and ramblings
about his past, how he was feeling (usually not happy) and his father - although
that was kind of to be expected in a movie such as this. The pleasant surprise
was Christensen who portrays Angry Teen with amazing talent and is much better
in this than he was in Star Wars. His transition from completely f*cked up individual
into loving son and brother is extremely plausible and very, very moving. Very
good use of music - Joni Mitchell's Both sides now is used in a very beautiful
scene as are Guster's tracks What you wish for (opening scene) and Rainy Day
- which is used in one of the movie's most heart-wrenching and painful scenes
which mark a significant moment in Sam's change of thinking. Did I mention Hayden
Christensen is beautiful-looking??? 8.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I liked this- it was a lil schmaltzy
but I love my Dad and thus anything that involves.. well people loving their
Dad always strikes a chord with me. Not a fan of Kevin Kline normally but he
does a good job with this one - the basic plot is pretty predictable but it's
obviously a character development piece and I think it does a good job with
this. Haydn Christensen shows he's got a bit more scope as an actor and I really
like Jenna Malone - not sure what it is about her but she has a very real quality
about her - liked her in Stepmom and Cheaters and she's great in this too. Nice
film, glad Koala made me watch it;) 7.5 out of 10.

There's a Tigger and a Piglet at least. The premise is cute with Stitch being
named an illegal experiment and escaping to Earth. Lucky for us Ving Rhames
convinced them that mosquitos are an endangered species and Earth is a nature
preserve. 8.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: What a great cute film, Stitch was
so manic and Lilo so sweet with her swimming and feeding the fish and her hula
dancing and so in love with animals and the love for her family and wow what
a weird strange scary family services guy who does not believe in aliens and
poor older sister trying to save her family with a destructive alien wreaking
havoc. And of course lots of surfing scenes cause everyone in Hawaii surfs!
8.5 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I thought I wouldn't like this
because Stitch is ugly but it was very heart-warming and I almost started crying
inflight. :) Cute use of Elvis music, and it's just a sweet little movie which
warmed the cockles of my homesick heart as I was on the flight back to Australia.
7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: My initial response was the
same as Koala's - Stitch was ugly and it was set in Hawaii? yawn. However
I was pleasantly surprised and found this to be quite watchable - it doesn't
quite have the same feel as the earlier Disney flicks and no memorable songs
from the movie, but it was funny and really put forward the importance of family.
Liked it. 7.5 out of 10
Lord
of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring
Cat's rating and comment: From the very first moments of this
film I was enthralled. The locations, costuming and special effects captured
the essence of the book for me. I can't wait until the next instalment. One
of those films where you can get totally caught up in the moment even if you've
read the books five million times. 10 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Now what can I say? So faithful
to the story that the bits that are left out are barely noticeable. I have seen
this twice and want to see it again and again and why do I have to wait a year
for the second one? 10 out of 10, definitely a great film. I could go on but
I won't. There were a few things that niggled on the second viewing and discussion
but nothing that warrants taking away from the film itself.
Koala's rating & comment: So bite me. I've seen it five
times now. I totally totally loved this. I'm going to stop gushing now but FOTR
officially replaces Moulin Rouge as the movie for which I say: "If you
didn't like this movie, I just don't think we can be friends." *grin* Click

Pocket's rating & comment: Good. 9 out of 10.
Hehe. just jokes. Fellowship of the Ring is a great movie but I never give perfect
scores cos films cos I'm a prick like that;) Having said that this movie had
alot to live up to and I think it delivered with gusto- characters, cinemtography,
screenplay, costumes, acting, direction- even sound effects. it's a great piece
of art that really shows all filmmakers just HOW to adapt a book to a film.
The attention to detail is also amazing, u really need to see this film more
than once (or sometimes u have no choice..hehe.
Lord
of the Rings: The Two Towers
Cat's rating and comment: Another gorgeous
film in the LOTRs series. I'm sure the purists are upset over the big deviations
in the plot for this one but I won't bother listing them all. The major disappointment
is that Faramir is not fully developed. In fact his part has been so completely
compressed that he doesn't appear to be the same person. There's still time
to redeem him in the third film though so I'm trying not to dwell on it. The
Rohirrim are fabulous. Peter Jackson and his team have done well with the details.
I particularly like the helmets with the horse nose-guards and the horsehair
plume. I'm impressed with Eowyn and dying to see her big fight in the next film.
I was pretty happy with the Ents too and hope there's some extended scenes released
later in the year. 9.5 out of 10.
Frog's
rating and comment: The first viewing of Two Towers I was very upset
about Faramir's
character... They did not show what great strength he has (hopefully it will
be rectified in the last one) He did not want the ring, for himself or for his
father, he was ready to reject it. I was also disappointed at the end, not in
the end of itself just that I wanted the film to keep going, partly because
I knew there was lots more in the second book they were missing out but just
that I wanted it to keep going and not stop because I wanted to know what happened
next. I know that they had to keep some for the third film because the third
book is not as long as the other two and mostly homecoming and well the second
film was long enough (how long will the extended be?) but I still wanted more
and now I have months to wait until the next one....
I was very excited
about seeing the Ents and their fight scene which you only hear about in the
book. I was disappointed that Pippin had to "trick" Treebeard into
taking a stand when in fact in the book Treebeard knew that Sauron had used
the information and knew about those trees being chopped down, he was their
shepherd after all and pretty slack if he had not noticed the songs of those
trees had stopped. And where was Quickbeam? And we don't get to see the magical
properties of the rope which they use to climb down with and putting the rope
around his neck makes Sam seem really cruel when in fact he tied the rope nicely
around Gollum's foot, as much as he hates Gollum and so you don't really understand
why Gollum hates the rope so much. Gollum was great, very scary and slimey and
awful and the great
arguing scenes between Slinker and Stinker. I liked the special affects and
the fight scenes, some bits were a bit corny but others were nice that if you
had read the books they put stuff in that you could understand but didn't matter
if you hadn't. I cannot wait to see it again - I think I preferred Fellowship
out of the two as being my favourite, 9 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: to come - and it will probably be very long ... [Frog's comment to Koala: You haven't done "The Two Towers" yet?" [Koala back to Frog: I know, terrible, huh? But I reckon I'll review the Extended Edition because it's a better version. How 'bout that for an excuse?]
Pocket's rating & comment: This film I felt could have been abit of a cop out in the fact it KNOWS there is a movie before it, that did all of the character and plot developments, and also had a film AFTERWARDS to tie things up so it can concentrate on just what happens rather than having to phat out anything. Arguably I think it is poor film making to expect viewers a prior knowledge of the subject material- however given these books are mega huge and would be impossible to make each film self contained. That ALL aside, it's AWESOME, amazing to watch and just powerful stuff, really good at sucking u into the world of Middle earth. I actually enjoyed it more than the first- The characters all get some mad biffo screen time and it really doesn't feel like 3hrs. great stuff, 9 out of 10.

for a more detailed summary. The story is simple, set in Hong Kong, Holly (played
by the talented Cecilia Cheung) is a young woman whose minibus driver fiancé
Ah Man (Louis Koo) is killed in a traffic accident. Left alone, she also takes
on the burden of caring for Ah Man’s 5 year old son, Lok Lok - played
by an extremely cute kid named Harashima Daichi. Holly arranges for Ah Man’s
minibus to be repaired and decides to become the regular driver of the minibus.
A "guardian angel" comes along in the form of a fellow mini-bus driver
- Dai Fai played by the even more talented and incredibly expressive Lau Ching
Wan. The movie is very moving and sad - has moments of humour and is a fascinating
insight into the world of mini bus drivers in Hong Kong. I kid you not. I suggest
you watch this! 8 out of 10.

Koala's rating & comment: I suspect I will be in the minority
here. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this movie was sweet and well-done
- but seems to be quite over-rated ..... What am I saying??? It just seemed
like a nothing movie. Nothing we haven't seen done before. Both actors were
quite good in their roles - but was it hard? Bill Murray's face just looked
positively creepy in many shots - too much foundation/make-up or something,
but he was never plausible to me as a possible love interest even in
the "remote desert island" scenario which Coppola was trying to portray.
That being said, it was a good effort ... and will probably win an Oscar ....

Undercover
Cat's rating and comment: Very very cute. New, enthusiastic
graduate from the police academy accidentally ends up working undercover. It
has all the elements of a romantic comedy. While their quarry is falling in
love with her, she’s madly scrambling to be the best police officer she
can be. Great slapstick, ridiculous situations, likable cast. 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: This was a very cute sweet film
even if the subtitles kept annoying me by being wrong or missing out stuff.
I only assume wrong because they would translate half and then the people on
screen would still be talking and they would say some words in English which
would not appear in the translation. But I managed to muddle through it and
think it very sweet. Very slapstick and spoofish 7 out of 10 (lose half a point
for the subtitles)
Koala's rating & comment: stupid Honkie movie but so incredibly
cute. I love the song "Brave" from this, Daniel Wu is adorable and
so sweet and I can't believe I watched this movie. :) 8 out of 10 for cuteness.

Maid

Cat's rating and comment: Yes we really will see just about
anything (unless there’s cannibalism involved). And let me explain ..
going to the movies on Friday night is a bit of a trap because the last thing
we want to see after a week at work is something heavy, depressing or with subtitles
(I really am turning into a little old lady!!). But Ralph Fiennes is lovely
.. and I’ve quite enjoyed Jennifer Lopez’ films as well and u know
by now we’re not shy about romantic comedies. It had a little more substance
than we were expecting which was a pleasant surprise. It didn’t blow anyone
away, it was predictable and overly sweet. Just what the doctor ordered …

Frog's rating and comment: Cute Cinderella film, plot line
obvious but still nonetheless a sweet film. Not much substance so perhaps a
merengue of a movie, nice shell but not much inside. Feel good sweet romantic
if only comedy 6 out 10

was nothing about it that I hated. 6 out of 10.

Matrix
Reloaded
Cat's
rating and comment: It must be the year of the sequel again. Okay,
in many ways Matrix is a little different because we knew there was more coming.
So I went back and watched the original film because I couldn't remember all
the details. I remember being blown away the first time I saw it and it's still
gorgeous and a very interesting idea - my only reservation is that innocent
people keep getting knocked off .. the agents take over human beings so when
Keanu wipes one out, someone who's trapped in the Matrix dies. But enough of
my rambling. I was expecting to be a little disappointed with the second film
but wasn't. Cool action sequences, the world was consistent and a little more
was revealed, I like the fact that when they're out of the Matrix they look
moderately crappy. Generally speaking a thumbs up. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: *sigh* Well that famous fight scene
with all the Agent Smith's went way too long for my taste. It was good though,
I enjoyed it at the time though part of me wished they had not digitised it
so much, would liked to have recognised parts of Sydney like you could do in
the first one. 7.5 out of 10 I think I want to see it again.
Frog commented again: Agent Smith fight scene was very trying, it went on too
long for me. It was very mystical, mysterious and sexual. All these problems
to work out and all to be resolved. Not quite sure what mark to give it out
of 10.
Koala's
rating & comment: Still mulling over my review. Someone pointed
out and I have now noticed that the Oracle takes a red pill - remind me again
which pill did what? Loved all the fight scenes, could have done without the
Morpheus / Architect monologues which seemed to go on and on. The Woodstockian,
Zion dance scene I could also have done without, but am still thinking about
my review. Stay tuned. :)
P's rating and comment: I like the movie. Before
watching it, I was afraid that it would be like other sequel, blowing up those
good elements in the first movie and ignoring the storyline. I was surprised
the plot was so strong and complicated that we all have not much idea what ¡s
going on. The action was ok. Neo against Agent Smith was abit over the top.
The highway scene was great. Morpheus was cool in that. Remember to wait till
the credits are over and watch the preview of Matrix Resolution. 8.5 out of

Matrix
3: Revolutions
Cat's rating and comment: to come.
Frog's rating and comment: to come.
Koala's rating & comment: I'm going to go out on a limb
here and say I liked this movie. I know that it's all the rage to sneer and
scoff and claim that this movie failed to live up to the first. Quite frankly,
that sort of opinion indicates an overly jaded palate. The first Matrix movie
was quite special - ground-breaking and introducing movie-going audiences to
a new experience. After that bullet-time and those fancy wire effects and computer
special effects were copied by everyone and people became quite accustomed to
it. Revolutions has a number of shortcomings. It doesn't spend nearly enough
time on the main characters, diverting attention on a number of secondary characters
with which the audience has little connection, Neo and Trinity are given very
short shrift unfortunately. On the plus side, I thought the Defence of Zion
was very exciting - the APUs were cool, the funky chick fighter Charra was suitably
girlpower and the martial arts fight sequences were lots of fun. Keanu is still
a very beautiful-looking man, and standing stark and austere in his grim black
outfit, he is quite a sight to behold. For me this movie ended the trilogy nicely,
answers some questions, but didn't try to tie everything up with a neat bow.
The scenes of Sydney train stations and parks was a plus and as a fun pop corn
movie was well worth the money. I'm glad I saw it on the opening night! My somewhat
picky companions, all agreed that the movie was an improvement on the second
movie and the movie provoked a fairly lively discussion after we left the theatre.

Koala's rating & comment: Enjoyed this a lot more than
I thought I would. While I normally cannot stand Brad Pitt, he was deeply amusing
in this. The music was absolutely gorgeous, the bickering between Brad and Julia
was delightful and the jewellery that Julia wore was very pretty as well. 8
out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I liked this, wasn't sure how
I'd take it but it was really kinda.. well abit nothing but nice at the same
time. The chemistry between Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt was actually quite good,
and you really like James Gandolfini's character. Light but fun. 8 out of 10.
Minority
Report
Cat's rating and comment: I read recently that Philip K Dick
is the most filmed science fiction author. He’s responsible for ‘Total
Recall’ and, of course, ‘Bladerunner’. Of course when they’re
adapted for the screen they’re tidied up a lot … John Anderton,
for example, goes from being bald and middle aged to being … well, Tom
Cruise. It’s a great looking production. There are little details that
make it seem so real. It’s suspenseful and the action sequences are great.
And it’s wonderful to ask the question ‘if you know what the future
holds can you change it?’. However, the heavy handed message that Spielberg
is so intent on forcing down our throats is there: The whole technology-is-taking-away-our-personal-freedom
thing is there from the very first minute of the film. Still enjoyable though.
8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very exciting, action paced thriller
but not dying to rush out and see it again. If it comes on TV might turn it
on. Enjoyable, loved the look of the future, not quite inthe future future so
things are still recognisable but other things very interesting to see how things
might develop. Eye stuff very scary and yuck. 7 out of 10
Koala's rating and comment: I expected more from this movie.
The trailers made it look stylishly suspenseful and fast-paced. There was certainly
a lot of action, but the movie could never really decide if it wanted to be
an action flick, a mystery or a slap-stick comedy. Tom Cruise plays the same
character he always plays (teeth gritted, on the edge zzz), Colin Farrell was
wonderful if underused and the oracle thingies were very spooky and sad ......
still there were way too many gross-out jokes for my liking and by the end the
movie seemed to have gone on for a little bit too long ..... Don't get me wrong,
I really enjoyed it, it just didn't quite live up to my expectations...... 6.5
out of 10.
Pocket's rating and comment: Loved the jetpacks, loved the
cars, loved the concept, movie just..I dunno - kinda got mixed up with the whole
science mixed with psychic mystical crap and then moral ethical dillemas. Opts
for a sterile future where alot of it is believable; the idea of stopping crime
before it occurs is an interesting one, and the 'jails' for the 'criminals'
is disturbing. But you kinda get pissed off with the pre cogs and just wish
Agatha would stop acting like Rainman and close her eyes before they pop out.
Speaking of eyes, ewwww? 7.5 out of 10
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: As a lawyer I had a problem
with the premise of this film. And it didn't get better from there. Look, it
looks nice enough and Cruise does his "serious tortured man of action" shtick
convincingly enough, but the plot was obvious and it suffered from that perennial
problem of "If only the film finished 10 minutes early"... Sorry Margaret and
David, I can only give this 2 stars (5 out of 10). Babe factor 6 out of 10 (Colin
Farrell wears too much clothing).

but eminently watchable and entertaining.7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Joins the league of all those other
beauty pageant spoofs but I think I liked the Kirstin Dunst one better (Drop
Dead Gorgeous) but fun and silly, ugly unsophisticated girl made gorgeous and
everyone falls in love with her and she changes people's ideas. blah blah blah
7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Didn't hate it, but while it
was entertaining, I cannot stand beauty pageants. Although this was ostensibly
spoofing them, I can't help feeling it was in some way approving of them but
I did enjoy the "One in a Million" sequence even though it's impossible to get
that damned song out of your head once it's there ..... 6.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: This was a good watchable braindead
flick that once I finished it, thought "hey that was cool" and forgot
all about what it was about. While it was trying to spoof Beauty Pageants, I
think the rest of the world outside the US don't take them seriously anyway
so it wasn't that much of a comical success- Sandra Bullock likable as always.

Cat's rating and comment: It was so much fun. I loved the atmosphere

cute cute! Shall I label it again? Cute! Monsters scared of contaminations from

very dramatic and scary and funny, lots of enjoyment, keep on doing it PIXAR
9 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I always enjoy Pixar movies.
I never love them though - not like traditional Disney animation. For some reason
while they tend to pack a lot of wry wit, they always have a lot of fatuous
Americanisms, preachy elements and bits the drag. There are some great one liners,
visual gags and moments in this movie but I didn't love it. 7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I thought this was great- The
interaction between Mike and Sulley was awesome, and I just thought Boo was
the cutest animated kid to be seen for a long time. Really funny stuff and lots
of jokes that can only be appreciated the second or third time around. SOme
of the monsters were a lil icky, but the idea was really clever and the containment
scenes were awesome. 8 out of 10
Moulin
Rouge (Koala was excessive and saw this three times on 3 consecutive
days)
Cat's rating and comment: Okay the second time we saw this
we had trouble stopping ourselves from singing along we were so caught up in
it. If a musical can make it seem natural to burst into song it’s got
to be good and considering we have a habit of doing that ourselves . . loved
the music, loved the costumes, loved the characters. 10 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Twice for me and it would have been
good to see it a third time - on a different weekend. Lots of fun, costumes
amazing! The singing great and I never liked Nicole Kidman but after this film
(and The Others) I am sold, she can sing and act. 10 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Purely emotive response on my
part. I love Ewan, I love musicals. 10 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I love musicals, and this was
just a scensory masterpiece- looked great, sounded great, just excellent work
all round. Couldn't fault the film for what it was trying to achieve. Breathtaking
stuff. 9 out of 10
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Loved it, loved it, loved
it. Looks gorgeous, sounds gorgeous, Ewen looks unusually gorgeous, Nicole is
gorgeous. Sensible story which didn't get in the way of all that gorgeousness.
Loved the editing in the tango/Roxanne sequence. I cried a river during the
final "Come What May" scene. To quote a friend of mine: "Baz Luhrmann is a god"
I would add Catherine Martin, too. Special note: watch out for Richard Roxborough
stomping on the "little frog" in the picnic scene. Cracked me up. This one gets
a 9 out of 10. Babe factor 6 out of 10 (for Ewen's (relatively) clean cut look).
Mummy
Returns
Cat's rating and comment: Entertaining is a good description.
It was fun but lacked the spark the first one had. And the Scorpion King was
really silly. 5.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I think I saw this but it was along
time ago and I think it was alright, oh wait no it had The Rock in it and so
basically sucked especially when he turned into a scorpion with his head on
top of it! 5 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: Entertaining, not as witty and
funny as the first although the fight scenes were excellent. I really loved
the first tone - thought it was fun and romantic and goofy. 6 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Disapointing. Had potential
but just didn't pick up the pace of the first one and u found yourself thinking
"I really want to like this" but not happening. Still kinda cool though.

The
Musketeer
Cat's rating and comment: hmm .. I love the Musketeer legends
but D'Artagnan is sooo wet. The other's were okay but not outstanding. The best
thing about this film was the fight scenes. Catherine Deneuve was fabulous as
Queen Anne. 4 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I liked the three musketeers (with
Charlie Sheen et al), this one was different but alright. The hair was awful,
especially wet and D'Artagnon looked like a reject from "Legends of the
Fall" Fight Sequences amazing, Tim Roth great as per usual 5 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Enjoyable fight sequences, terrible
hair, terrible acting but a lot of fun. Much better than the atrocious Three
Musketeers. I laughed out loud quite a bit in this one. =) 7 out of 10.
My
Big Fat Greek Wedding
Cat's rating and comment: A fairly gentle film that makes you
smile. I guess Australians won't find this outrageously funny because it's not
really new humour for us but it still made me giggle. I particularly liked her
father's linguistic analysis. 6.5 out of 10
Frog's rating and comment: Side splitting humour, hilarious,
I was nearly falling off my seat from laughing so hard. It was a great laugh
and not the type of humour which is painful to watch but one where it is just
a good laugh. If you know what I mean! I enjoyed watching this film and the
feel good story behind the making of it is just as good. Many many good quotable
lines, nice to see some Australians in the film. 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: This movie was adorable.. I love
Chris in the morning from Northern Exposure - he was so sweet. Toula was endearing,
the family were hilarious and I loved the music in the movie as well. The first
and the second time Toula and Ian met had me grinning madly! Favourite line
was the dad's "apple and oranges" line - very heartwarming!!! 8 out

My
Sassy Girl
Cat's rating and comment: Wow .. a moderately happy Korean
film. I didn't know they existed. And I guess the girl from the title isn't
exactly the most pleasant character and spends all her time humiliating and
beating up the narrator but it still made me smile. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: haven't wathed it yet.
Koala's rating & comment: I've never watched a Korean film
before and I gather that while this film is typical in terms of its 'violence',
it is
atypical for the sweet romantic humour it contains. I loved this movie - sweet,
funny and very touching. 8.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I liked this alot, although
I found I could relate to it waaaay to easily! A lil on the asian slapstick
side, but underneath it all very sweet and nice film all round to watch. 8 out

Ned
Kelly
Cat's rating and comment: It’s nice to see them updating
the Ned Kelly legend. I know he stole things and murdered people but you can’t
let the truth get in the way of a good legend. I’m a little confused about
how the circus got written in & there should have been more Joe Byrne bits
(there’s a lovely speech in a play I read back in high school) but generally
speaking it was entertaining & well produced. I thought it was amusing that
the Victorian Police were portrayed as being corrupt, but as my friend Paul
says, ‘a police force reflects the society it is charged to protect’.
9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I felt manipulted in this film and
not fully engrossed. the cinematography was beautiful... the Australian landscape
and Australian animals but I did not feel fully into the film? Is the story
too much part of my national identiy that I have my own feelings on it and don't
want to see another's point of view. Or was I there prepared to be manipulated
and that's why I felt manipulated? I sat there analysing the film, somethign
I don't normally do. A couple of times I felt for the film, with poor Dan and
Steve trapped inthe fire and when the first gun shot is fired at another man
but usually I felt pretty clinical about it (or felt I was watching Young Guns
or Wisdom). I sort of wanted to see the court room and hanging, why? I don't
know, maybe that is how I know the story and it is not complete without that?

the movie before I liked this but then I found myself liking it in spite of
myself. Yes it's one of those Stylish Dramas, but the ensemble casting is excellent.
George Clooney doesn't dominate, everyone in the 'eleven' is very entertaining.
The music and the feel of the movie is wonderful and the one liners and the
ironic twists are delightful. Julia Roberts' character didn't have a great deal
to do though. It was probably too much of a guy's movie. =) 8.0 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: This movie kicked butt and I
wanted to go rob a casino (or at least steal something) after this film. Just
a very stylish slick film, everyone was quite likable, and even the bad guy
in Andy Garcia- u couldn't hate him. Julia Roberts was perhaps the weakest role,
and given she was the centre of everything going on they could have brought
her out more, but as for the "eleven", they were all excellent and
a movie I thought was even smoother hep cat than the Rat Pack in the orginal.
9 out of 10.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Very enjoyable film. Great
ensemble cast who really look like they are having tons of fun. It takes a little
while to warm up, but if you get into the pace of the film, it never disappoints.
Great look (Brad's clothes are divine). The portrayal of the depth of relationship
between Clooney and Pitt is delicately but convincingly done. Hats off to all
the actors, but especially Clooney, Eliot Gould and Andy Garcia. So much energy
in this cast it could power a small country. Soderbergh (along with Ang Lee)
is one of my favourite directors at the moment (everyone should see "The Limey").
8 out of 10 for this one. Babe factor 9 out of 10 (Damon (see Bourne Identity
review) Pitt, Clooney, Scott Caan... oh my).
Once
upon a time in Mexico
Cat's rating and comment: to come.
Frog's rating and comment: to come.
Koala's rating & comment: I saw this with with Donna and
P. Although P gave it the thumbs down, I really liked it. Stylish, bittersweet
and with a thread of melancholy and regret running through it - the action sequences
were tempered by beautiful shots and a gorgeous soundtrack. I am a total suck
for Spanish guitar and the Salma Hayek song at the end credits "Siente
mi amor" is a real gem of a song. Banderas this time around is still the
dead El Mariachi, this time haunted by the loss of his beautiful wife Carolina
(the sultry Salma Hayek). Puzzlingly enough, the story indicates that she used
to be the consort of some military guy, although in the previous movie - she
seemed to be an unattached bookstore owner - but that's neither here nor there.
Bloody coups, CIA double-dealing and manipulations are the backdrop in this
movie about revenge and deceit. Johnny Depp is a scream as the CIA operative
with the tacky clothes. I could have done without the whole eyeball scene (you'll
know what I mean when you see it), but he was very good. I'm definitely revising
my original opinion of him as a pretty boy with no talent. Biggest criticism
is that for some reason, the beautiful guitar music in the opening credits is
NOT on the soundtrack. Boo hiss. 8.5 out of 10. PS: Antonio was way cuter in
Desperado ;)
P's rating and comment: to come.
The Others
Cat's rating and comment: A good scare. There was a woman sitting
in the back of the theatre screaming which was pretty freaky. It was nice going
with the twists .. trying to figure out what the real story is. Got completely
caught up in the 'Others' reality. Fantastic. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Fantastic! I am terrible at scary
films but this just swept me away and kept Cat and I amused trying to work out
what was happening. We kept changing our minds. Definitely worth seeing and
out of this world. 9 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Frightened me to death. I am
such a good audience member for ironic twists. I never solve anything until
they come out and tell me and I do the big: "Oh" routine. This movie
was scary, suspenseful, beautifully acted and filmed and Nicole Kidman was amazing
in the part. Did I mention I was scared to death? Keep an eye out for the creep
creepy Book of the Dead. Great Googly moogly! 8.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Freaky Film, slow but not painfully
so and worth the wait. I picked up the "twist" straight away partially
because I was told there was a twist! Nicole Kidman definitely shows scope in
her acting, and the picture was just very eery. Agree the book of the dead was
ewww;) 8 out of 10
Panic
Room
Cat's rating and comment: It's easy to see that I'm swayed by
nice looking films and lovely living spaces. Loved the house. Nice twists and
turns between the characters who all played well off each other. The girl was
well cast (she has Jodie Foster's chin). All in all pretty good. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment:This film did have me on the edge
of my seat but then again I am easily put there, anything with tension in it
has me tapping my foot. In some bits it was silly in that Jodie Foster goes
one minute from panicking and putting her life in danger and the next minute
able to manipulate the phone system. Forrest Whittaker was great and nice to
see a guest appearance from "Sydney" from "The Pretender".
6 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: This was a deeply strange movie.
I have no idea what it wanted to be. It was entertaining I suppose. Jodie Foster's
Edward Furlong-look alike DAUGHTER was kind of whiney .... I don't want to trash
the film but it just appeared to have a very odd storyline and plot. Was it
an action, a thriller, a psychological drama? No idea. Also - did anyone else
roll their eyes when the daughter turned out to be diabetic? Oh puh-lease -
please stab me with a fork. 6.5 out of 10 for being directionless. 5 out of
10 for having diabetes/Life Threatening Illness Requiring Immediate Treatment
as part of the storyline - see Con Air (note: Con Air was a better movie IMHO!).
Pocket's rating & comment: Home Alone did a better job
at this. This movie, while having solid acting, never really knew what it was,
nor did u really empathise with any of the characters. Forrest Whittaker just
always plays these misunderstood bad guys and Dwight Yokham- well ok he manages
to be very convincing as a royal prick. If I had a panic room i'd be stocking
it up with... Ventolin Puffers, Antihistamines and Gameboy.6.5 out of 10.
Phone Booth
Cat's
rating and comment: Wow!! This blew me away. An entire film shot in
a phone booth and it was still suspenseful. Great performances from Collin Farrell
and Forrest Whittaker, nice vocals from Keifer Sutherland. I don¡¦t
know what else to say ¡K you should all rush out and see this one!! (doesn¡¦t
hurt that Collin Farrell is cute too) 9.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: to come.
Koala's rating & comment: for some reason I was expecting
a lot more from this. Colin Farrell is normally very cute but he looked quite
grubby and icky in this movie .... 7 out of 10.
Pirates
of the Caribbean
Cat's rating and comment: It’s a little disturbing that
Disney is resorting to making films based on their amusement park rides. Having
said that, I have to admit that it was one of my favourite rides when I was
a kid & I’m pretty sure one of the Dirk Pitt novels ends up in it.
So we rushed off to see it and I wasn’t disappointed. There was swashing
& buckling, insane pirates, pieces of gold, evil pirates, damsels in distress
(well only briefly). Kiera Knightley was great! And Jack Sparrow was spectacular!
9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: My first reaction to this movie
having a subtitle was to ask Cat if there would be a sequel. ;) I didn't notice
that Orlando's profile is not the best sorry Koala. Lots of swashing and buckling
and unbuckling and swordfights and adventure. Quite a long film, perhaps just
a little bit too long but I loved the twists and the turns and all the excitement
of it all. Only thing bugged me is I did not recognise who Keira Knightly was
until the end credits and it all made sense then. 8/10
Koala's rating & comment: lots of fun - Johnny Depp was
hilarious and Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley make a very good-looking couple!
The commentary on the DVD given by Jack Davenport is very hilarious. 8 out of
10.
Planet
of the Apes
Cat's rating and comment: There was really no point in going
over the social commentary of the original series. Instead Mr Burton has opted
for concentrating on the mannerisms of the primates and the general look of
a culture. And it's fabulous. Helena Bonham Carter's and Tim Roth's scenes are
wonderful and the interaction between all the characters is stunning to watch.
I really loved it .. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Well it definetly let it set up
for the sequal at the end there...... bit silly that the human girl hardly gets
anything and they have the underwater sequence to show off her swimming skills
cause she is some swimming star (and well to get her into wet clothes) *shrug*
not fussed, though the ending was pretty cool even if it was a set up 7 out
of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Very enjoyable. The soundtrack
by Danny Elfman was suspenseful and scary, Helene Bonham Carter and Tim Roth
turn in a wonderful performance and the apes look fantastic. I'm not a huge
fan of the Marky Mark although at least he didn't do his: "Oh baby, oh
baby, I'm sorry" routine in this one. Twist was fascinating at the end.
I enjoyed this. 8 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I thought this was pretty cool,
although u kinda hope Mark Whalberg gets with the Ape rather than the useless
bimbo. Ending was very much like a Resident Evil style twist and one that I
find always leaves me feeling somewhat disturbed. Tim Roth and Michael Clarke
Duncan make awesome monkey dudes;) 7.5 out of 10
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Unbelievable plot (and not
in the good way). Even if you take out the whole "ape thing" It is (somewhat)
redeemed by Tim Roth chewing up the scenery, Helena Bonham Carter in a quite
subtle performance behind all that make-up and Mark Wahlberg in his tight spacesuit.
Mostly silly though. 6 out of 10. Babe factor 9 out of 10 (I will also watch
anything with Mark Wahlberg in it).
The Princess
Diaries
Cat's rating and comment: I liked it a lot. It was very sweet
and Disney but thoroughly enjoyable. Julie Andrews was great as the Queen and
Anne Hathaway is likeable. The makeover wasn't as unlikely as they normally
are and she didn't become super princess overnight. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very cute and sweet, typical story
girl goes from frump to beauty (do you get the idea that well this annoys me?)
but very sweet, I liked the bit when she says to the guy something about how
he liked her when she was unnoticeable. Very sweet story, very cute and the
actors were pretty fine. 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Cute movie. I quite like Anne
Hathaway, her Requisite Annoying Best Friend was sufficiently annoying. I almost
felt sorry for Julie Andrews though - she looked a little uncomfortable in the
role of Fairy Godmother. Confession - I was humming the Backstreet Boys song
for ages afterwards. 7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I like chick flicks, but this
one didn't get me. Didn't understand why it was anything special- expect it
more as a telemovie on during the "Wonderful world of Disney" when
I was younger. Maybe cos i'm not a chick. Her annoying best friend is the female
equivelent of Chuck Sherman in American Pie- the teen actor u need when u need
someone very unattractive. Cute is about as good (or patronising) as I can get.

Proof
of Life
Cat's rating and comment: "I know you’re in pain,
mate”. Heh heh .. any film that gets away with a line like that has to
be good. I was expecting tacky romance but it was well put together and an interesting
subject matter. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very silly, glad they cut the sex
scene with Meg Ryan and Russel Crowe that she does not cheat on her husband,
gives better tension that way, that they almost but not quite. Very silly lines,
quite silly story but well still enjoyable 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Very low key 'romance', but dramatically
very intense. I enjoyed it. 7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I thought this was cool. Always
into movies where dudes get sent in in guerilla style. Russell Crowe was good
in his role, and agreed that the tension is there with him and Meg Ryan, but
they don't cave and do a cheesy love scene (Ahh Cindy and William in Fair Game..eeech).
David Caruso's character was great and almost a show stealer- even though noone
but his mum like him... 7.5 out of 10
Queen
of the Damned
Cat's rating and comment: I have read the book and was a big
Anne Rice fan (not so much of the Mayfairs, however). It was a slick looking
adaptation with not much substance. I remember believing Akasha was a real threat
in the book … not so much in the film. Stewart Townsend was well cast
I thought and I liked the imagery. It made me chuckle in several places. Enjoyed
the music, reminded me of my goth days .. 6 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment:Haven't seen it. Probably won't.
Koala's rating & comment: Not having read the books I probably
wasn't as outraged as I might have been. As it was, I found this movie extremely
entertaining and deeply stupid at the same time. Lestat the Vampire Rock Star...
um yeah - it could happen. One mantra that went through my mind as I watched
was - thank goodness they dumped Stuart Townsend as Aragorn in favour of Viggo.
No offence to Stuart but he just would have been such an appalling Aragorn,
I mean sure they both have dark hair but hey. But back to Queen of the Damned
- the acting was extremely cheesy although I rather liked the song performed
by Lestat at Death Valley. Marguerite Moreau should have stayed in the Mighty
Ducks movies, Aaliyah seemed to spend her whole time slithering and looking
serpentine. What a very silly movie. I should add that I may have nightmares
about Stuart Townsend's hairy nipples for sometime to come ... 5.5 out of 10.

Red Dragon
Cat's
rating and comment: The third instalment in the 'Silence of the Lambs'
series. The second one was so atrocious it was nice to go back to a scary thriller.
Edward Norton was great as the profiler who originally caught Hannibal Lecter

Reign of
Fire
Cat's rating and comment: Ridiculous premises don’t always
make for a bad film. The mythical dragon proves to be real and makes a big comeback
wiping out most of the human race. One group of people make their home in an
abandoned keep somewhere in England and try and survive by growing their own
film and building other technologies, but time is running out and they may soon
be destroyed. Along come a group of gung-ho Americans with a brilliant plan
to go to London and kill the only living male Dragon hence destroying the species.
Sounds a little farfetched, doesn’t it. The characters are old-fashioned
heroes and it reminded me of 1950s BBC dramas. It was lovely. Christian Bale
is fabulous as the leader of the outpost. Matthew McConaghay is a bit of a caricature
but enjoyable nonetheless. It’s had terrible reviews but when has that
stopped us seeing anything. And I think it’s saving grace is that it concentrates
on the characters rather than the dragons. The special effects blend into the
background to make it much more believable. Two thumbs up!! 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very very silly premise, very very
filly plot - full of holes like the dragon's wings but I am not saying it wasn't
enjoyable. It was! Definitely needed suspension of disbelief but that's what
movies are about. It also made for lots of discussion afterwards about it, and
that's a good movie, one you can talk about afterwards even if you are pulling
it apart. 6 & 1/2 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: Finally saw this one on DVD.
It did have a very "old" style feel to it and I found it extremely
suspenseful and interesting. Very strange premise I agree, but still very entertaining.
Christian Bale was lovely, the romance was cliched, Matthew McConaghay (whose
name I can never spell), was very scary and bizarre-looking but interesting.
I felt sorry for the best friend with the interesting accent but best friends
in movies like this are always Marked For Death ..... Keep an eye out for the
cute nod to Star Wars. 8.5 out of 10 for entertainment value.
Pocket's rating & comment: I thought this was pretty cool,
You never really get where this wants to go, but the story was quite original
in the fusion of technology, science, post apocolyptic themes and fantasy into
one. I don't think anyone would go into this film expecting anything more than
exciting popcorn fare and it delivers. 8 out of 10
Returner
Cat's rating and comment: Haven't seen it.
Frog's rating and comment: Haven't seen it.
Koala's rating & comment: Ummmm, Takeshi Kaneshiro - most
beautiful man in the world or close to. Also, how can you go past a guy who
speaks five languages, looks absolutely gorgeous and can act. The storyline
is very cliched - elements of Matrix, ET and any other action flick, but the
result is stylish and very engaging. Anne Suzuki as Milly is very winsome and
I enjoyed this movie a lot. 6 out of 10 for the storyline but 9 out of 10 for
the entertainment value, eye candy and long-awaited Takeshi-fest.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Interesting film. Look, it
has solid performances from most of the cast. Kaneshiro is attractive in that
wan, lean, soulful kind of way (which I don't dig, but others do). Problem is,
the movie never quite hits its mark. It feels like a celebrity guest star on
a sitcom who is never quite properly in shot. If that makes sense. 6 out of
10. Babe factor 6 out of 10.
The
Ring
Cat's rating and comment: I used to try and see the original
film before seeing the American remake but didn't get a chance this time. I
think I have to rate this as the scariest film I have ever seen (and I love
scary films). It's full of disturbing imagery and just when you think you've
figured out the answer ... well you'll have to go see it for yourself. It's
always nice to see Australian and New Zealand actors working in Hollywood. 8.5
out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Haven't seen, won't see (too scary
for lil ol' me)
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it, although whenever
I see the title I think of The Lord of the Rings. Typical of me. :P
Pocket's rating & comment: It's freaky- gave me the chills
the same way Blair Witch did when I first saw it (before the hype, no idea what
it was about or the background..disturbing as hell). Read alot about the original
Japanese version which disturbed me enough and then saw this one and.. eech
the scene everyone talks about.. well yes call me a wuss but it scared the hell
out of me and i was doing the "slumped in my seat pretending to rub my
eyebrow alot" pose. Brrrrrrr. Apparently the Japanese DVD has the full
video on it and it's apparently very rarely viewed... 8 out of 10
The

Cat's rating and comment: To come
Frog's rating and comment: Haven't seen this.
Koala's rating & comment: Pocket bagged this, but I loved
it as I cried bucket-loads. I'm not sure why I loved it so much. Touching acting,
heart-breaking sobs - maybe I was in the mood for a good cry but it's a traditional
love story about girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boy, boy goes away
for a really REALLY long time but girl and boy still love each other. =) 9 out
of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: girl meets boy, girl falls in
love with boy, girl is REALLY keen and there's a broken rice bowl. I sat there
going "err, nice and all but... huh?" found it a lil pointless, but..
Koala liked it so I will say I liked it too. and give it.. 6.5 out of 10.
The
Rules of Attraction
Cat's rating and comment: I’m a bit of a Brett Easton
Ellis fan .. apart from that whole ‘American Psycho’ dealio which
was disturbing as a book and, although slick, pretty bad as a film. I read this
book when I was still in high school but had forgotten some of the amusement
.. particularly the overdose scene (‘I’m not dead am I?’ …
‘Yes you are!! Shut up!!’). The film-makers have updated it which
makes it more accessible for current audiences. I still say they could have
used ‘Dancing with Myself’ in the party scene when Paul’s
supposed to jump around like a maniac in his underwear but it was done pretty
well. Interesting casting; James Van Der Beek as the American Psycho’s
little brother, Paul looked like a young Rob Lowe, and the girl who was so insipid
in ‘A Knight’s Tale’ who looked like a young Lisa Bonet. Liked
the music, liked the look, very amusing and strangely reminiscent of my own
early university days (which were far tamer!!!). 9 out of 10.

Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it. Probably won't?
Pocket's rating & comment: haven't seen it.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Like Cat, I am a bit of an
Easton Ellis fan. I am intrigued by the fact that he satirises the glamour world
he portrays but at the same time, he seems compelled by it and wants (if he
was honest with himself) to be a part of it. Or maybe that's just me??? Anyway,
good performances all round. I love (as I did in the book) the re-telling of
the same circumstances from different character's points of view. But I am sick
and tired of hearing about what a "brave role" it is for James Van Der Beek!
So he plays a college drug dealer and he snogs a guy on screen. Big deal! Hollywood
should get over its earnestness about how important it is to be able to portray
"gay life" on screen. Hey! Guys! It's just life! Anyway, rant over. 6 out of

Koala's rating & comment: My god. Could this movie have
been any worse and contained any more gratuitous asian slurs? I'm gonna kick
your butt back to the Ming Dynasty / Bangkok? I wanna get some mushu? Jackie
Chan - I'm all for exploiting Asianness for the sake of humour for for the love
of mike, at least make it funny!!!!! Zhang Zi Yi was absolutely wasted in her
role as the evil Hu Li. The glamorous undercover agent was atrocious as were
Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. 3 dim sums out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: A friend brought this back for
me to watch, even though I didn't request it, and I am glad I didn't pay for
it, nor even have anywhere documented that I wanted to see it. It was honestly
a load of crap. Really bad stuff, take every stupid asian cliche and throw it
into a movie, and assume by having it set IN Hong Kong and having Jackie Chan
in it makes it all ok. Piece of Crap. I said that before huh? Piece of Crap.

Save
the last dance
Cat's rating and comment: Okay this was a similar storyline
to the other dance films we’ve seen this year (and in the eighties and
nineties) but the social commentary on Chicago was interesting and the setting
was pretty different. Loved the mix of styles. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: They say there are only what 7 original
story lines in the world and
everything else is a take on that. Well that includes this film,
doesn't mean it's a bad film but definitely interesting. I could definitely
feel for her in feeling a minority in her new school in Chicago, I've been there,
not school but the minority in Chicago. Sweet, sad, coming to terms with her
mother's death, getting to know her dad and well having to move and develop
a new life. 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I saw this twice at the cinema
for some reason. I really liked it - found it sweet and poignant. I'm not saying
it was high art, but I really liked it. Oh. I already said that. I saw it with
Cat and Frog on the Friday and then went and saw it again on my own on the Saturday!
:) 8 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Sucker for teen movies, sucker
for dance sequences and a right old hip hop soundtrack. Attempts to address
racial issues but shy's away from it near essential points and also projects
the age old movie cliche that if u are a african american teen and not on the
high achiever path, then u will join a gang and pack a gun any time u can. (rarely
do u see black nerds in movies) Still very cool to watch, and did i mention
the dance sequences again? Don't stop diggy diggy... 8 out of 10
Scooby

Cat's rating and comment: They did quite well with the casting
on this, particularly Matthew Lillard as Shaggy (Shaggy was always my favourite.
A lovely piece of nonsense. I enjoyed it thoroughly. Of course it probably helped
that I was on a plane with nothing better to do. Daphne's boots were spectacular!!
6.5 out of 10.

Serendipity
Cat's rating and comment: Another romantic comedy .. usually
good. Nice use of co-incidence. Looked good, felt good … etc etc etc …
7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very cute, seen it a couple of times
(forced viewing on planes) and definitely a few fun moments with mistaken identities,
cute with the concidencies they keep cropping up, were they "meant to be"
or should they have stayed apart? Sweet and it is John Cusack 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Reminds me of the song "If
you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with". This movie's
great if you're the soulmate character but bad if you're the "love the
one you're with" character and I couldn't help feeling sorry for the rejected
ones even though I know I was supposed to be revelling in the all consuming
power of love .... The music was wonderful particularly "Moonlight Kiss"
and the David Gray track - other than that, I felt sorry for the non-soul mate
characters. Over-identification much by the endangered arboreal marsupial? Maybe.
7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I thought it was nice, but I
did feel bad for the main character's fiances. I like the idea of fate and love
and the elevator at the beginning was soo.. "omigod!" but then u do
start to feel bad for the situation they were in- and at least they didn't cop
out by making the fiances really unlikable in a cliche 2 dimensional way. You
kinda hope John Corbett and Bridget Moynihan meet and get together- they'd have
better looking kids anyway. I like John Cusack though, he's always so likable
regardless of what role he's in. 8 out of 10
Shadow
of the vampire
Cat's rating and comment: I can't bring myself to be as harsh
as Koala but the ending was quite distressing.A great concept and I loved Willem
Dafoe wandering around looking like Nosferatu. 5.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Very intriguing concept, very interesting,
loved the idea that the main actor in Nosferatu really was a vampire. Always
liked the film Nosferatu so this just added to it. 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I really hated this movie. Willem
Dafoe looked impressive, the concept was cool but the characters were all revoltingly
repellant and I hated the ending. 3 out of 10.

Koala's rating & comment: It was entertaining, a little
bit gory and Toni Collette's character was a little bit wasted. 6 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: By the trailers, Christian Bale
comes across as the ultimate bastard bad guy, but in the film, he's actually
really quite pathetic. He's not really even the main bad guy, and u wonder why
Shaft doesn't just give him a slap on his wrists and move on to a more important
case. Still it gives Samuel L Jackson a chance to look a menacing tough guy
role (compare it to his role in "Long Kiss Goodnight") and I thought
it was at least pretty decent flick to watch. 7 out of 10? Daaaaaaamn right..
Shanghai
Knights
Cat's rating and comment: The second offering in the Shanghai
Kid series. There were some lovely moments; ‘Jack the Ripper’ is
supposed to be stalking Whitechapel, and the gags with the names continue, and
our heroes end up hanging off the hands of Big Ben. Owen Wilson is lovely again,
full of wisecracks & in love …. Again. Jackie Chan is great at this
kind of slapstick humour. I loved the ‘Singin’ in the Rain’
scene. 7.5 out of 10.

Koala's rating & comment: Directed by famous HK actor Stephen
Chow (who apparently worships Bruce Lee), this movie is a strange little classic
which was hilariously endearing simply because it's so damned weird! The story
is as follows, "Golden Leg" Fung played by Ng Man Tat is a former
soccer superstar. When he accepts a bribe to throw a critical soccer match,
he falls into the nefarious plot of one of his teammates and his career is ruined
(angry fans basically beat him up and he becomes crippled). Hung (played by
Patrick Tse) is the evil soccer overlord who is wealthy and powerful (chairman
of the National Soccer League). Fung's depressed, miserable life turns around
when he encounters Sing (Stephen Chow), an endearingly optimistic martial artist
from Shaolin Temple who is also down on his luck (now a cleaner) who is wracking
his brains to find ways to bring Kung Fu into the mainstream and let people
know how good it is. In a nutshell, Sing enlists the help of his former Shaolin
brothers (a bunch of loserly, down on their luck guys who have lost their kung
fu abilities over the years) to form a Kung Fu based soccer team. In another
storyline, Sing also gets to know Mei (played by the very adorable Vicki Zhao
Wei's) who plays a painfully shy and hideous-looking girl who uses her fantastic
Tai Chi skills to make sweet mantou (steamed bread). I know it sounds weird.
It has every cliche you can think of - seeing beauty within, triumph of the
human spirit and overcoming previous setbacks, clash of good against evil /
David and Goliath and how one man can change the fortunes and spirits of others.
There's even spontaneous dance routines, psychological breaking and very cool
wire-fu.
So why do I like this? I guess it's because I went into this with low or no expectations at all. I didn't really know what to expect and the sheer quirky originality of the movie with the genuinely whole-hearted performance given by the actors is really heart-warming. I also love being surprised like this. Sing is very lovable and I love his team mates as well. The Bruce Lee look-a-like goalie is hilarious, Iron Head has one of the most expressive faces I have ever seen and the rest of the team also have their quirky traits.
I also love Vicki
Zhao Wei. Her lonely figure standing in front of the mantou shop making bread
is just a beautiful image. I love that initial shot of her, and the way such
an ordinarily beautiful and confident actress is able to play a petrified and
disfigured girl is really heart-warming. The special effects are a little bit
cheesey but very fun. Seeing a soccer ball start out as a burning sunspot and
then turn into a flaming panther who is roaring is cool. I also love the panning
shots and the way camera follows the ball as the team are running down the field.
There's a particularly effective "hero" shot of Chow as he raises
his arms and the camera pans around him in an almost empty stadium and then
as the rounds unfold you can see more and more audience members being present.
The music is fantastic in that scene. Favourite scenes:
- Sing describing how kung fu could be useful;
- first glimpse of Mei and the conversation;
- Thriller tribute;
- the "Kung Fu is great" song;
- first soccer "battle" between Xing and the thugs;
- the first soccer match in which the team finally gets its power back;
- watching the team progress through championship - with the music in the background;
- Karen Mok and Cecelia Cheung's cameos - they looked very cool with their blue
and white uniforms, moustaches and dreads :)
- Bruce Lee goalie
- Mei crying into the mantou ....
What can I say, I loved it. You may hate it, you may think it's stupid and cheesey
and just damned strange but I'll give it a high score of 9 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: to come.
Shrek
Cat's rating and comment: Enjoyed it. My little cousin is so
obsessed with this film that she had to get a Princess Fiona dress. It's got
some good moments and I liked the ending. 6 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Loved the film, cute very cute.
I thought I wouldn't like it with the toilet jokes at the beginning not being
my thing but once you got passed that it is very funny and silly. 7 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I was disappointed in this movie.
I expected more for some reason. I really liked the fairy tale satire but the
rest left me cold. I hate booger jokes, I hate ear wax jokes, I can't stand
Mike Myers and I thought the trolls looked really ugly. Didn't appreciate the
humour in this one at all. Can't believe Pocket bought the DVD. What was he
thinking? 6 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I thought this was great actually,
Soundtrack was good and the film had alot of "watch it several times"
jokes. Wasn't a real fan of the love story element- found some of the themes
a lil questionable in the love stakes, but otherwise it was funny stuff. admittedly
a lil overrated these days. Eddie Murphy as Donkey was fantastic, but if u like
that u're better off checking out Mulan. 7.5 out of 10

Cat's
rating and comment: I’m not entirely clear about what this film
was. M Night Shyamalan is so very good at suspense and making you fear the monster
under your bed but ultimately I found this a little confused. It played a little
like Independence Day with fewer characters and special effects.. and it started
to look like it was a War of the World’s hoax. The last scene wrapped
things up really nicely … but it’s an uneasy sort of a film. 6.5
out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I think perhaps it would have been
more intriguing if we had never seen the aliens, kept it in the corner of our
eyes, was it real, was it imagination, was it war of the worlds? It definitely
kept me on the edge of my seat and kept me guessing and the end was a bit of
a let down because everything so neatly tied together. Leave some loose ends,
keeps people frustrated and guessing, this told you all the answers. 7 out of
10
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it yet
Pocket's rating & comment: I cheated and checked out the
spoilers to this film first, which made the film sound really dorky, but watching
it, it's got alot of atmosphere and really pretty cool. Makes u always feel
a lil... unnerved and it's a movie where u actually like Joaquin for a change.
Mel Gibson plays.. Mel Gibson, and u have another Culkin kid there, complete
with the "omigod i am trapped and need medication". Maybe one day
Asthma will save my life too. 7.5 out of 10

Cat's rating and comment: The only positive review I read about
this film was an Australian saying that Hugh Jackman turned in a good performance.
I really enjoyed it.The two leads were nicely drawn and why can't I meet someone
like that? And why can't I have an apartment like that? 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Ashley Judd and Hugh Jackman, who
could ask for anything more? Greg Kinnear a right royal bastard! Gorgeous apartment,
lots of candles. Very cute, lots of fun and I loved the cow theory!! 8 &
1/2 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I enjoyed this - Ashley Judd
and Hugh Jackman are lovely together. Unfortunately there was way way way too
much Greg Kinnear in this film, but I found it very sweet and cleverly executed.
I also liked that they included Absolutely Cuckoo in the soundtrack! 7.5 out
of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Really wanted to like this movie
a whole lot more than I did. Greg Kinnear- was..boring. And so they.. focussed
way too much on him, and not enough with the character development with Ashley
Judd and Hugh Jackman. Hugh Jackman might as well have been a supporting actor.
Not quite the way I like my romantic comedies, and not memorably enough to distinguish
it from other romantic comedies. Good, not Great. 7 out of 10
Spider-Man
Cat's rating and comment: It’s so great when a midnight
session falls on a special occasion.. particularly when your friends are all
on holidays or out of work or the film offering is good enough to make everyone
stay up late!! (Oh dear I must be getting old…) Spiderman opened at midnight
the day of my birthday and I managed to convince five of my closest friends
to go with me … and it was definitely worth it. Modernising superheroes
is a great idea.. the special effects are so much better now. And even though
it was setting up for sequels the storyline is not disappointing. Tobey Maguire
is lovely. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Fantastic! Midnight viewing and
I stayed awake!!! Which means it must have been fantastic cause I fall asleep
pretty easily - Cat can testify! Bit gory towards the end, I could not believe
how little blood there was at the beginning with his uncle being shot and all
that and at the end when he fights the Green Goblin it is all gory and horrible.
Kirstin Dunst cool and Toby Maguire good as the dork trying to come to terms
with his powers. Nice set up for the sequal. 8 & 1/2 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: As I've always been pro-Superman
in the superhero stakes, I've never really been a fan of Spiderman, but was
quite excited about buying into the hype and attending the midnight screening
of Spider-Man. I really enjoyed this film - Tobey Maguire was excellent in the
gawky, wide-eyed role of Peter Parker but also great as Spider-Man. Willem Dafoe
is incredibly ugly but what an amazing actor and his scene in front of the mirror
was marvellous. Lots of pathos (I got teary-eyed once!), action, suspense and
humour. Go web! 9 out of 10 for sheer fun value.
Pocket's rating & comment: An excellent comic book adaption,
from the costume (always a crucial thing for me, adapting the costume to big
screen always worries me- see daredevil) to being quite faithful to the comic
story line, while daring to make a decent movie out of it all. Appeases fans
of the comic and newcomers alike. Toby Mcguire was actually well cast as Peter
Parker, on the whole I think everyone was really. I saw this several times and
still find it excellent to watch. 9 out of 10.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: Very cool film. I think Tobey
Maguire is a fine young actor (as they say) and both he and Kirsten Dunst did
a great job. I know everyone says it, but their chemistry really does light
up the screen. It was quite faithful to the concept of the comic book and I
just found it a rollicking good time. 8 out of 10. Babe factor 7 out of 10 (a
buff Maguire in tights, what more do you want).
Star
Wars: Episode 2 - Attack of the Clones
Cat's rating and comment: Been waiting 20 years to see Yoda
pick up a light sabre and give someone what for … Dooku didn't stand a
chance (particularly after they gave him such a stupid name). After the disappointment
of 'Phantom Menace' it was nice to see George Lucas back in stride (even if
he insisted that Mr McGregor sport his rather out of date hairstyle). The chemistry
between Anakin and Amidala was a bit light on to say the least (it's nice to
know the next generation of females get the hang of it). More special effects.
More light-sabres. More ridiculous dialogue. It was jolly good fun. Looking
forward to the next instalment. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Well labeling this as a /good/ film would not do it and good films justice. It cannot be said that the acting is brilliant and sparkling, the story line - well they say there are only 7 story lines out there so not very original but still it is STAR WARS! Obi-won and Anakin's whinging and bickering all the time was a little tiring but for all of this I liked it. This is a FUN film, I enjoyed it, lots of swashing and buckling! Fun to recognise familar Aussie and Kiwi actors (even with Temura Morrison's broad vowels and bad acting with his "son". "Dad, someone's following us" "He must have put a tracker on us!" But it was fun, laser fights, especially Yoda's. There were fun scenes and intersting aliens, I like Mace Windoo's "The party's over" and the C3PO and R2D2 scenes where C3 loses his head but yes it is weird that they forget ObiWon in Episode 4 so that has to be explained. Don't go looking for deep meaningful love scenes (or deep meaningful anything) but if you want high adventure and fun, sit back and enjoy and don't critique. 8 out of 10
Koala's rating and comment: I really enjoyed this. Sure it had its faults but it was better than Episode 1, I thought Anakin was beautiful, as was Obi Wan. I liked the lightsabre duels. 8 out of 10. To read more, click here.
Shylock's rating and comment:Episode II is a thoroughly entertaining piece of cinema - reunites some great characters, has an awesome soundtrack, develops the fairy tale story line and includes amazing special effects. Yoda, Obi Wan and Samuel L Jackson excel in their roles as Jedi masters and Natalie Portman (aka Matilda) puts in a credible performance. George Lucas obviously took some note of the viewers' thoughts on Episode I and mercifully scaled back the role of the insidious Jar Jar. However, his obsession with clones, droids and computer generated imagery makes you feel you're simply watching a video game at times and it becomes simply boring to see one more robot destroyed. Anakin's character developed satisfactorily as we assumed it might - fell in love with Padme, showed fear and anger and general tendency to move to the dark side, and general impatience to become the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy. However, a combination of Anakin's acting and the dialogue let him down. This was most evident in the love scenes with the Princess which appeared contrived and unconvincing. Still, Episode III is a must-see. This one scores 7/10. [For the record, Episode IV and V score perfect 10s]
Pocket's rating and comment: Everyone at work is whinging about Ep.II...that other than the last 20 min or so - it was pretty crap. I wouldn't go so far as say crap, but it really wasn't anything to say Lucas redeemed himself. The problem I think with prequels is that they have an already made story they have to accommodate and it seems they're writing it to suit, not that he's already had them written but chose to make 4 5 and 6 first. A lot of the storytelling is just to accommodate "why's?" so in trying to tell the audience about origins and so forth, it tends to lose pace. It's like they're trying to fit in A LOT of stuff in just a few hours and not sure what should be explained and what shouldn't be (cos in a way, you could watch 4,5 and 6 without even knowing the origins of Boba Fett or the Empire). Click here to read more. 6.5 out of 10 for me.
Darth Simiouss rating and comment: SW Ep II AOTC is, despite wooden acting, poor dialogue, a convoluted plot (or series of plots), persistent contrivance, the mind-numbing short-sightedness of the Jedi Order and the utter silliness of the Naboovian Big-arsed Herbivorous Rat-creatures, the GREATEST MOVIE THAT HAS BEEN MADE so far. If I recall rightly, I went on to discuss more about the tribulations of Achilles, but that would not interest your readers without the benefit of the previous discussion.
P's rating and comment: I must say it¡¦s not a good Star Wars movie. I don¡¦t know what is George Lucas was thinking about. Having special effects doesn¡¦t mean you can ignore the script. The ¡¥sound of music¡¦ running scene is definitely the worst scene ever. Obi Wan was great, Yoda was great, Samuel L Jackson was great, Padme was mega pretty. I could be a better Anakin. I also can put my head down and my eyes looking upwards when I wanted to be evil. Fighting was perfect, except when Padme was fallen from a ship as if she was fallen from a bike. Stand up and ask them to keep on going. 7 out of 10
Star
Trek: Nemesis
Cat's rating and comment: Ho-hum. Disappointing really. I liked
the big-bad although he was a little weak. I liked the crash .. but I’m
afraid this played like an extended ‘Next Generation’ episode; add
an action sequence and put it on the big screen boys!! 4 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: *sigh* I had such high hopes, the
trailer looked great, the premise was interesting and it was AWFUL :( Lots and
lots of talking with occasional action, the action sequences were great but
there were not enough of them and just lots and lots of boring talking! NOt
at all interesting, First Contact is my favourite of the three, such a shame.
3 out of 10 (lost points for stupid wedding and sex scene but least Jean Luc
was still in it!)
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it.
Pocket's rating & comment: haven't seen it.
P's rating & comment: As long as it's a Star Trek movie
and Patrick Stewart is in it, I'm already happy. I must admit this is not a
good movie. It¡¦s like a 2 hours long episode (actually some of
the tv episodes are even better). The badie was quite good but he didn't have
a great character. It would be a bad bad bad movie for the last movie of next
generations. My brother said whenever Diana Troi was piloting the ship, it would
be crashed. 5 out of 10 just because it's a star trek movie.
Sum
of All Fears
Cat's rating and comment: Let me start by saying that I haven’t
read any of the Tom Clancy books and I haven’t followed the films very
closely. I know, however, that this is completely out of order with the other
films. So I’m sure there are people complaining … It was a very
entertaining film. I’m sure we irritated the audience by talking through
the entire thing (about the film of course) but we just couldn’t help
ourselves. One of those films where you cheer for the good guys. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Took a while to work out where in
the sequence of films this fell and very intriguing to work out what would happen
and I cannot believe the bomb actually went off. Very cool and exciting film

Suriyothai
Cat's
rating and comment: What the hell is 'Suriyothai' I hear you all asking.
'Suriyothai' is the story of a Thai Queen who went out to battle on Elephant
back and was killed defending her kingdom. I am no expert on Thai history and
I find it quite confusing at times but this was a really great story and done
in the style of old Hollywood epics. My sister-in-law tells me that the language
they are speaking is 'old Thai' or 'formal Thai' and there is something about
the
delivery that makes me think of Shakespeare. 9 out of 10.

SWAT
Cat's rating and comment: To come.
Frog's rating and comment: To come.
Koala's rating & comment: Entertaining, Colin Farrell looks
much better here than he did in Phonebooth, I would have liked an increased
role for Michelle Rodriguez who is permanently playing tough latino chicks,
funny to see Nawanda (?) from Dead Poet's as a SWAT officer, but on the whole
the movie was slick and suspenseful and was very enjoyable. 7 out of 10.
The Sweetest
Thing
Cat's rating and comment: I don’t normally like this
kind of humour .. it’s kind of painful because you know these people are
going to get themselves into embarrassing situations. Maybe it’s because
the three leads (Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate and Selma Blair) are so likeable
and moderately normal that this kinda works. I’m still not sure what appealed
to me but I chuckled the whole way through. 6 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: This is /so/ not my usual humour,
this is the sort of thing I would run screaming from and poke my eyes out too
Koala but I don't know what it was, I actually liked it and laughed throughout
it. Don't shoot me, I know, it is awful sex and toilet humour but I liked it.
5.5 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: big ewwww - hated it, couldn't
finish it and felt so let down because the trailers made it look so cute. It
was so forced, the Penis Song was painfully forced, the actresses looked very
embarrassed and unnatural the whole movie - I wanted to poke out my eyes in
protest. 2 out of 10 although in all fairness I shouldn't rate a film I haven't
finished.
Pocket's rating & comment: Ugh. once again wanted to like
it, couldn't finish it. NOrmally a fan of gratuitous singing and dancing, but
just found the intro sequence painful. went downhill from there. couldn't finish
it. no rating
Sweet Home Alabama
Cat's
rating and comment: A lovely sweet film. Small town girl changes her
life and identity and moves to New York, then has to come to terms with her
origins to move forward. Hee hee .. and I loved the cat story. Aparently this
was shot in North Carolina rather than Alabama. It's a pretty part of the world.
All the characters are nicely drawn and fun. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: This was quite a sweet film with
Reese Witherspoon playing a girl from *duh* Alabama, making it big in the Big
Smoke (New York). She is just about to launch her clothes in a big fashion week
premiere and her rich smart cute politician boyfriend wants to marry her (his
mother, the mayor of New York - Murphy Brown star Candice Bergen hates her -
no political connections or money). The only problem is Melanie Carmichael seems
to have a past she is running from. Seems her real name is Melanie Snooter or
even Melanie Perry as she already has a husband down south. Jake Perry (Josh
Lucas) plays the husband who has refused to sign the divorce papers. It is a
time for Melanie to find out who she is and what she has been running from.
I found it hard to decide if she should marry Andrew (Patrick Dempsey) or stay
married to Jake. Kept you on your toes trying to decide what was going to happen
and I am not going to tell you what happened. I liked her "cousin"
Ethan Embrey, and want to see more of him and please more of Josh Luscas! A
nice cameo from melanie Lynskey (Coyote Ugly, Heavenly Creatures) 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Still articulating what I hated
about this movie. Review to come. In the meanwhile, I agree with Pocket's review.
Also, you might want to check out discussions held
between Frog, Cat and myself on this particular movie. Quite possibly it has
been the only movie where I have had such a dramatic difference of opinion with
them. :) I note that P also agrees with their review over mine and Pocket's.
3 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Ugh one of my most hated films
of the year thusfar. I can't go into it without revealing everything, so I'll
just say that I hated Reece Witherspoon in this movie - her character was just
a selfish, nasty bitchy weak character who manipulated and used people to work
out what she wanted, leaving crucial decisions to the last minute that WOULDN'T
have been made if fate hadn't intervened. Both guys should have dumped her arse
and realised what evil devil's spawn she was. Didn't even call her mother. Ethan
Embry was good, so I'll give it 2 out of 10 for his performance. And maybe for
the nice cars.
Sweet
November
Cat's rating and comment: Well almost every film we've seen
this year has been good so there has to be an exception. It looked good. I liked
the contrast between Keanu and Charlize's worlds. The soundtrack was nice. But
why, oh why, did she suddenly go grey half way through the month? 3 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Pretty silly and daggy but not /that/
bad but not /that/ good either 5 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: *choke* *gasp* My god - what
was this movie trying to be? The storyline was awful, the acting was awful.
Bonus points for well-placed use of the Enya track "Only Time" though.
4 out of 10.
Swordfish
Cat's rating and comment: No, no, no more death please .. I
quite happily looked over the holes in the plotline and sunk myself into the
Swordfish world. I will, however, say that John Travolta’s character talked
an incredible amount of shit, the screens were very pretty but where was the
hardware?, and the blow-job scene was overly gratuitous. Hugh Jackman is still
lovely. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: haven't seen it.
Koala's rating & comment: Cat will probably kill me for
this, but while I think Hugh Jackman is awfully sweet, this movie made me cringe
in its depiction of hackers and the like ... The leap over a cliff also made
me blink .. 5 out of 10.
Terminator
3: Rise of the Machines
Cat's rating and comment: Again I say the sequel (in
this case, third in the series) offers more than I was expecting. The ‘Terminator’
trilogy has given nice space-time continuum twists as you try and figure out
if the logic actually works. And this film finally brings the head around to
catch the tail. I hope that someone picks up the torch and makes the battle
against the machines because I’d like to see the detail (please). Cute
one-liners from Arnie remind us of earlier episodes & the dark look of the
previous films is continued. And there was enough smash-em-up action to satisfy.
8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: I was feeling a bit over
the whole Terminator thing, more milking the series, ho hum but this was much,
much, much better than I thought it was going to be. I very enthusiastically
took part in this movie, definitely on the edge of my seat and thought it was
a great sequel. Well worth seeing. 7/10
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen
it but give it marks for having a cool name and poster. Pity they can't ditch
Arnie though - getting a bit tired of him ;)
Tomb
Raider
Cat's rating and comment: It was very entertaining. The storyline
was crappy, much preferred Ms Croft enjoying herself than the silly missing
her father storyline .. I had a little more trouble leaping over the gaps than
with Swordfish but still enjoyed it. 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Well only playing game once and
getting stuck in a room after killing killer wolves. So anyway live action,
hrm well it had an australia in it but does this give it extra points. It's
a while til I have seen it and it has not really stuck with me except her swinging
around on the ropes killing people. 5 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: I enjoyed this. The storyline
was shakey and the acting by Jon Voigt was very dodgy but the fighting was excellent
and Lara looked cool. Footage of Cambodia is always a bonus. 7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I expected more. Action sequences
were the bomb, but the last part of the film really made little sense and really,
who cares about a relationship if they screen writers fail to develop it throughout
the film? Angelina Jolie makes a delicious Lara though. And I don't even like
Angelina Jolie. Noah Taylor was abit of a nothing??? 7 out of 10
Tomb
Raider 2
Cat's rating and comment: Again I have to say that
all the elements are there but it doesn’t gel somehow. Loved the stunts,
the look, the cast … *sigh*. 5 out of 10?
Frog's rating and comment: Unbuckling of swashes,
stunts, actions, beautiful women, mystery, myths, comedy, romance, drama. What
more could a film want? A soul. This film seemed to have everything and yet
it did not grab me. I did not feel fully involved in the film and I felt there
was something lacking. My friends who I saw it with all agreed with me and it
is similar to the first one in that it is all action and no.. what is it. je
ne sais quoi? Ok so I can't speak (or write) French. 5 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen
it, probably won't, but based on what I thought of the first one and what I've
heard about the second one - 5 out of 10. :)
The
Touch
Cat's rating and comment: Generation after generation of Michelle
Yeoh's family have trained as acrobats so they will be able to retrieve an apparently
mythical relic and save the world (or something) .. Meanwhile, Ben Chaplin has
grown up in an orphanage and been rescued off the street by Michelle's father.
He's gone on to make a career out of stealing .. you guessed it .. priceless
relics. This is kind of cheesy but also enjoyable, with a great cast and some
cool fight scenes. 8.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Quite enjoyable little film. Stupid
younger siblings running away and getting themselves into danger. So surprised
at the ending, I thought all bad guys would get hurt and good guys survive but
almost but not quite. Not sure if I am supposed to give away endings or not
here. Ben Chaplin interestingly goodlooking, not sure what it is because he
is not drop dead gorgeous but there is something about him. Fun film 6 out of
10
Koala's rating & comment: OK Ben Chaplin singing "I
only care about you" was hilarious, but apart from that - this movie was
bad .... I feel so sorry I forced my Honkie friends to see it. I'm
lucky they didn't dump me. 6 out of 10.

Frog's rating and comment: I love Denzel Washington so really
hard to take him as a bad cop which I suppose makes him such a brilliant actor
which he is. Bit too violent and wow do people really live lives like that and
do things like that? Just thankful the girl did not lie and he did not get killed
6 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Eww. Disturbingly violent. I
don't know if I like Denzel as The Big Bad. Ethan was surprisingly good. I quite
liked the storyline about the rescue in the alleyway but the rest of it was
just violent, disturbing and upsetting ....... Cat - I'm so sorry we saw this

Wonderful performances from the entire cast, particularly Edward Norton. The

(with the exception of P, Donna and Kevin) all hated this movie - it doesn't
make sense, it's confusing. It's true that in his typical style, Wong Kar Wai
does not hand things to his viewers on a platter. Quite the contrary, he enshrouds
it in mystery and obscurity. Click here

P's rating & comment: I always say that for wong kar wai
(WKW) movies, you don't just watch it, you have to feel it. It's all about feelings.
So if you like his works, that means you can feel it. If you don't like them,
don't bother to watch his other movies, including the coming ones. 2046 can be
a individual movie, but to me, it's a roundup of his other 2, Days of Being
Wild and In the Mood for Love. You don't really have to watch the previous 2,
but sure it would give you a different view.
2046 has a lot of elements in it, sci-fi, romance, sex...but actually it's talking
about simple things. It's about people. Wong didn't have any new theory about
relationship. It's plain and simple. We all have tried loving someone who doesn't
love us back. We have tried missing the previous lovers, we all have the experience
that we 'think' we get over with the previous relationship, but actually it
is still affecting us.Wong kar wai is good at taking these common feelings,
and touches your deepest wounds. the wounds that may be healed long time ago....
In the three movies, almost none of the characters have a good ending, except
for faye and kimura. But i would think that faye's happy ending is to contrast
with tony's. Tony's character, the man who thought he had changed, but end up
he was just the same. still can't forget his past. Tony's acting is just fabulous.
You can see he has changed to a playboy but he is still the same chow mo wun
in in the mood for love. Zhang zi yi was very good as well. Faye and kimura
also did a good job in their parts. i just don't like gong li's character, it
seems so useless, just trying to put another female star's name on the poster.
Wong kar wai likes to shoot his story in small spaces, in a small room, a corner
of a restuarant, staircase or on a train. To me, it's a sign of repressing feelings.
the feelings of the people are all trapped inside a small space. there is no
way out. 10 out of 10
Twilight
Samurai
Cat's rating and comment: haven't seen it.
Frog's rating and comment: haven't seen it.
Koala's rating & comment: Extremely moving. Japan's
entry into the best foreign film catagory at the 2004 Oscars - it's soft, subtle
and a very touching story about the last days of the Samurai in Japan. Everything
is so evocative, from their clothes to their daily activities - I really loved
the attention to detail and the acting was really wonderful. 8.5 - 9 out of
10.

Koala's rating & comment: Entertaining and just a little
bit silly but still fun.... Ekin Cheng, known as the Keanu Reeves of Hong Kong
turned in an engaging performance even if he didn't blow me away. Anthony Wong
(superintendent in Infernal Affairs) was fabulous as always and very funny,
Edison Chen has such a great face - sort of pale and interesting. He is definitely
a cutie, criticisms of his Cantonese accent notwithstanding. I mean I wouldn't
have a clue if he has a dodgy Canto accent. The twins were bearable but in terms
of acting but turned in a very creditable fighting performance. 8 out of 10
for entertainment value.
Pocket's rating and comment: to come.
P's rating and comment: It's ok to me. May be I expect more.
Or I'm just too old for it. The part about Charlene and Edison was quite good.
But the part about ekin and Gillian was weak. Opening fighting scene was cool.
Anthony Wong was funny. The movie dragged abit at the end. The fighting was
too long. It's quite annoying that all girls in the movie screamed like hell.
Every single one of them. The martial art direction of this movie was done by
Donnie Yen, the guy who fought against Jet Li in the beginning of Hero. 7 out
of 10.

Frog's rating and comment: haven't seen it yet.
Koala's rating & comment: Kate Beckinsale looks good in
this. They must have spray-painted her leather outfit onto her. She is very
skinny. Poor Scott Speedman spent the whole time being beaten up, getting wet,
transforming, shivering, bleeding, being rescued. It was not the most interesting
of roles for him. Viktor, the big bad vampire was pretty annoying and the Lycans
(werewolves) were pretty fake looking in terms of CGI. I was saying to Zeitgeist
how vampires always have to look the same. They have the same fashion consultant
no matter what the movie - have to go for the old gothy, madonna-mtv-esque,
eyeliner, pale face, bustiere, leather look. I mean they'd probably be kicked
out of the coven for wearing a caftan or a safari suit - or pastels. I enjoyed
Underworld. Shall we call it "stylish"? Scott Speedman is quite cute
even though I really wish he would open his eyes wider. As Zeitgeist puts it,
he "acts by squint". 7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: haven't seen it yet.
Ripple's rating and comment: Some great bondage leather outfits
and a rocking DTS DVD sound track - this film is a cool Friday night special.
The sort of film you watch when you've had one of those weeks and "About
A Boy" just isn't going to cut it. Kate "Death Dealer" Beckinsale
looked stunning (and drove a Maserati 3200 GT - respect), as did most of the
busty wench vampires. The werewolves were cool as humans, especially the huge
black dude with the gravel voice, but the morph into werewolf form sequences
were rubbish - see American Werewolf in London for the real deal. I liked the
subplot re Victor (played by Bill Nighy (rock bad boy in Love Actually)), his
daughter and boss werewolf dude (Lucian the Lycan... ROFL) being the basis of
the war between the two camps. Also enjoyed that fact that the vampires weren't
portrayed with that usual sense of aloof righteousness - in Underworld the Vamps
are some bad ass high-tech killers with pointy teeth and big freaking guns -
although the idea of silver nitrate/bottled daylight bullets owes more than
a passing nod to Ultra Violet - the exceptionally cool 1998 6-part British made-for-TV
vampire mini-series. No doubt we'll see a sequel in which Scott Speedman's newly
forged WereVamp features heavily (in this film he play's a slightly upset punching
bag) Summary: A visually appealing, very cool, very loud film (listen for Judith
by A Perfect Circle) in my favourite genre - 7.5 out of 10. When I grow up -
I want to be a vampire - immortality appeals to me.

Koala's rating & comment: Gorgeous little gem of a movie
from Korea about a bratty little city boy who goes and lives with mute, shrivelled
old grandmother in a remote part of Korea. Moving and entertaining although
not as hilarious as the trailer may have you believe, I really enjoyed this
film. Despite Pocket's disgust at the inadequate repentence by the 7 year old
for treating his grandmother like dirt - I felt that a genuine bond developed
between the two and confess to crying huge quantities of tears during any of
the moving sequences. :) Yes, I'm a bit of a sap and I always feel sad when
I see old people in HK who are still working gruelling hours instead of staying
at home and watching bad tv shows...... 7.5 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I wanted to slap the lil kid
down, but it made me want to go and hug my grandmother after watching this.
I don't think the lil kid REALLY redeems himself, whatever Koala might
say, so he still deserves a slap. Good performances though. 6.5 out of 10 slaps.
Whale
Rider
Cat's rating and comment: A little bit of legend, a little
bit of magic, a little bit of women’s rights, a little bit of new life.
Beautifully shot & nicely told. Paikea’s mother & twin brother
die in childbirth & her father leaves her to be raised by her grandparents.
Legend has it that their tribe is descended from a leader (also called Paikea)
who rode a whale from their homeland. Unfortunately for Paikea she was supposed
to be a boy & it takes a long time for her grandfather to accept that times
have changed. It’s a bit of a tear-jerker. Absolutely beautiful. 10 out
of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Lovely sad sweet moving touching
film (how many other words are there that mean moving?) I even had to wipe away
tears throughout the film, won't tell you what but well for one who does not
cry often, I was sniffing and teary-eyed. I think most people were. beautiful
film about people coping
with loss and expectations and how other people can surprise you even when you
are blinded by their faults/gender/ethnic group. 9 out of 10!
Koala's rating & comment: In a nutshell, this story is
based on a legend that the ancient warrior Paikea rode on the back of a whale
and led his people to New Zealand. By tradition, the first-born male descendant
will become chief of the tribe. Things go "wrong", when Pai is born...
Not only does Pai's birth cause the death of Pai's mother and a twin brother
- Pai is a girl. As she grows up, her father leaves New Zealand, turning his
back on the old ways and Pai grows up beloved by her grandfather but at the
same time rejected because she is not the grandson he wanted to carry on the
line. The New Zealand accent can be a little jarring. Keisha Castle-Hughes is
cute as a button as Paikea, the girl who is the descendent of a long-line of
chiefs - but her ACCENT .... Anyway, this heart-warming tale is the story of
a girl overcoming her gender and also the disapproval of her grandfather who
she adores. I love whales, I love stories about overcoming the odds and this
movie is so very sweet. What is bittersweet and sad for me though is seeing
yet another race of once proud and independent 'warriors', reduced to an almost
sad ghetto existence in which substance abuse and family disintegration is commonplace.
Keisha Castle-Hughes is very good though. When she is delivering her "speech",
her tears are very very convincing. 8.5 out of 10.
P's rating and comment: to come.
What
a girl wants
Cat's rating and comment: A sweet little offering to warm the
cockles of your heart. Amanda grows up hearing about her father, the English
lord, and decides to go off to find him. Perfect timing really, seeing as he’s
about to marry Duckface, and spend the rest of his life being a stuffy politician.
And it turns out, of course, that there was a plot sixteen years ago to get
rid of the loud American (Amanda’s mum). It’s very Disney but you
can’t knock Disney too much. In the tradition of ‘a Connecticut
Yankee in King Arthur’s Court’ and so on. 7.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating & comment: Cute sweet fairy tale film which
is a bit sad if this is what makes a girl's life complete is if her parents
gets back together and she gets aboyfriend. I suppose I am being a little harsh,
at the time of viewing I enjoyed this film, very sweet girl getting caught up
in rich world and I loved her scenes with Colin Firth when he is discussing
her coming out and she wants to know coming out of where. One random point was
he asked her if she liked cocoa pops and she said Duh chocolate! But I love
chocolate but cannot deal with cocoa pops but I am weird like that! Anyway um

The
Wedding Planner
Cat's rating and comment: I must be getting soft in my old
age but I really enjoy a good romantic comedy. The characters were likeable,
the wedding that gets split up was a nice change. When you’re sitting
there on the edge of your seat because it looks like they’re not going
to get together you know you’ve been sucked in. 7 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Are you really supposed to wish
two people don't get married. It was quite funny watching all the rigmarole
going on, the best man getting prompts for his speech, the wedding planner giving
moral support to two people thinking of backing out of their wedding. 6 out
of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Cute, enjoyable and nice to watch.
Not much more to add. 7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: I saw this, and I thought it

a stupid last minute decision that cost someone thousands.... grrrr.. 7 out

What
Rats Won't Do
Cat's rating and comment: It's been a while since I watched
this film so I'm having trouble remembering specifics. It was a lovely film
though, with sweet characters. 8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: haven't seen it.
Koala's rating & comment: This is what romantic comedies
should be. Two attractive, appealing leading actors with genuine chemistry,
a host of droll secondary characters, hate at first sight and a sparklingly
funny script. I absolutely loved this movie although I guess it's a bit of a
nothing movie. I'm not sure whether it was the legal romantic comedy aspect,
or the lovely father / son interaction or what, but anyway, I gave it 9 out
of 10 and for a much longer review by me, click here.
Pocket's rating & comment: Don't like british movies on
a whole, but this one actually was really cool. Very funny and watchable, and
u like the characters quite abit. The whole courtroom setting was very funny.

Where
the heart is
Cat's rating and comment: The characters were wonderfully eccentric
and showed such warmth toward one another. It was such a bizarre setup with
the birth in Walmart. They could have cut the boyfriend out though .. he was
very irritating. 8.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: So cute, I want to see this film
again! So sweet and funny and sad! 8 out of 10
Koala's rating & comment: Rambley, blatantly sentimental
and kind of directionless but for some reason I really liked it. I thought it
was very very sweet and Forney was so lovely. I also liked the soundtrack. Agree
with Cat about the boyfriend - all of his scenes should have been expunged!
7 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: It was an Oprah Book club special,
and it's an Oprah style movie, and I love Natalie Portman and Ashley Judd, and..
kind of found the whole movie to be very slow.. but I liked it because it just
gave me found memories of Walmart, She south and Southern-accented women. Sigh..

Wrong Turn
Cat's rating and comment: A good solid film for the horror
genre … YAY!! Scream one minute and giggle the next. The premise for this
one is a group of young, superbly buff American kids getting lost in the backwoods
of West Virginia and hunted by inbred mountain men. I wonder if these guys got
their inspiration from that episode from the X-Files where the guys were breeding
with their severely disfigured mother. Anyway, it’s got Eliza Dushku in
it kicking butt (which is always good) and the main guy was very cute. I’ll
give it an 8.5 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: to come.
Koala's rating & comment: haven't seen it.
X-men
Cat's rating and comment: Okay I'm one of the millions of girls
that grew up with a crush on Wolverine. In fact I would even go as far as to
say that he was the first boy I had a crush on. It was a big thrill to recognise
so many of the characters and to see them depicted as I remembered. (I wanted
to join the X-Men when I was a kid). 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: When's the sequel coming out. I
liked the introduction of characters, and their powers. Very fun to see the
fight on the statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, I wish I had the powers to
fly up to the lamp of the statue, those stairs are killers!!!! Loved the high
tech toys, but I disagree with Cat, I always liked Cyclops better than Wolverine
but I am like that! (Gambit? is pretty cool too but is he only the cartoons?)
Koala's rating & comment: Very entertaining! Some likeable
leads, good acting and nice special effects. 8 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: This was the first comic book
adaption from Marvel that made huge waves (Blade perhaps, but not as big) and
it was well worth the hype. Everyone was pretty well cast, and it was quite
faithful to the comics while still giving it a good big movie feel. The story
was well thought out and the tongue in cheek humour really made the characters
quite likable. Hugh Jackman made a wise choice choosing this role..Famke Jensen
looks too old for James Marsden though? I read somewhere in the early days they
wanted...Dustin Hoffman for Wolverine? Excellent film, loved it. 9 out of 10
X-men
2
Cat's rating and comment: Nothing like a sequel. I’m
sure I’ve rambled enough in the last couple of years about how much fun
it is to see my favourite superheroes come to life … but Nightcrawler!!!
What a great job they’ve done of the teleporting. That first scene in
the Whitehouse with ‘Dies Irae’ blaring in the background and the
erratic jumping around … just fabulous. And there are so many future X-Men
floating around in the background. And the Jean Grey storyline was cool. I can’t
wait ‘til the next one!! Are they going to make ‘Alpha Flight’?
8 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Great rollicking film, better than
first, like the hint towards the next one what is going to happen. Bit silly,
I agree with Pocket about how come we saw so little of James Marsden and Patrick
Stewart. Pyro was a brat and poor Rogue still cannot kiss when she wants. But
I enjoyed it, the fight scenes a little violent but understood after Cat's explanation
that they needed Wolverine's Beserker rage. I don't seem to have rated the last
one but I would rate this one better so 7 for X-Men and 8 out of 10 for X-2.
That's funny Koala how you rate the first one better ;) And Nightcrawler was
sweet.
Koala's rating & comment: *snore*. The first one was better.
This one seemed to be a whole bunch of "cool scenes" joined together
by the barest minimum of a plotline. The fight sequences were good, the movie
looked cool - I just found it a bit boring. 6 out of 10.
Pocket's rating & comment: Disappointment 2. Wanted to
like this.. it had so much potential but I just sat there waiting for it to
get good. Needed more.. something.. Hugh Jackman was good as Wolverine, but
it seems Patrick Stewart and James Marsden must have had breakdowns in their
contracts to only get bit parts. You wonder why the hell they bothered introducing
Nightcrawler, he was kinda..irrelevant- and the whole Rogue/Iceman/Pyro parts
were just bratty teens doing their thing (Pyro especially was just a dick).
The bit parts for Collosus were cool though, as was the product placement RX8.
Lady Deathstrike was cool but not developed enough. Movie just didn't move along
enough for me. 7 out of 10 because it still looked cool.
Zeitgeist's rating & comment: I find it hard to review
and rate this. I too wanted to like this film and I did, but I don't know, something
just doesn't click. As a childhood reader of the comic book, it was fun spotting
all my favourite characters (go Colossus!) but the film was just a bit too "bitsy".
Still, 7 out of 10. Babe factor 8 out of 10 (for shirtless Colossus and Hugh,
and James Marsden's cheekbones). Oh yeah, Nightcrawler's teleporting effect
was way cool.
XXX
Cat's rating and comment: Bond for the grunge generation. Loved
it!! Had all the Bond elements; ridiculous weaponry, plots to destroy the world,
the XXX girl, an appealing lead, nerdy gadgetry guy … Obviously setting
it up for a series and I’m looking forward to that!! Vin Diesel may not
be the most beautiful man in the world but he has a great voice and an appealing
presence. 9 out of 10.
Frog's rating and comment: Um perhaps I should just say see
The Bourne Identity I mean wow I never though Vin Diesel was sexy before but
he has a gorgeous voice and a low class James Bond is pretty exciting. Thrills,
Spills and exciting locations (yay Prague - glad it was not destroyed, well
least not in the movie but I digress) 7 out of 10.
Koala's rating & comment: Haven't seen it - can't cope
with Vin Diesel.... The Fast and the Furious was one of the most woeful
movies I've ever seen - sorry Pocket. Frog - Vin Diesel? Sexy???? I leave the
country and Cat and Frog start admiring Vin Diesel???? :)
Pocket's rating & comment: Vin Diesel is cool, but he is
the WORST SCREEN KISSER EVER. watching him devour the girl's head.. I dunno.
And what's with his fur coat? I'm sure it's something really expensive from
Gucci or something but ugh. This movie was basically built for Vin Diesel, and
it wouldn't be a Vin Diesel movie without him walking about in a black tank
top, giving some sort of "I'm a rebel" speech, and driving
a muscle car. Still, it's got what Bond is lacking these days- a sense of excitement
and I found it quite good fun. 7.5 out of 10.
